They likely already are/did. When the guy took the airplane in Seattle, the Oregon national guard scrambled two F15 jets and they made the flight from Portland to Seattle in like five minutes.
That's what led me to my post. The Seattle guy stole a commercial jet so that was obviously going to get the military involved but would a plane this size warrant it? Perhaps we'll learn the answer as more info comes out.
I'd venture to say the sensitivity of the location more than the size of plane would determine the type of response in the air
