I dislike Trump, but honestly if I think about what the rest of the Republican Party has been supporting for the past 10 (at least) years, is he any worse? No. My theory is that he is just a bullshit artist who knows he can win the GOP nomination by appealing to its jingoistic high school graduates. I don't think he actually believes anything he has said so far in the process. Which brings up the question of -- what does he actually believe? How competent or incompetent is he, really? It is difficult to say because I think that there is very little relationship between what he says, and how he would actually govern. Some of the things he says about economics -- if you ignore some of the really sensationalist things like "We're going to build a wall" -- are actually intelligent. He wants a weak dollar policy. He wants to keep rates low. He thinks Janet Yellen is capable. He wants to finance public debt for longer durations. These are very sensible ideas IMO. I don't trust him, and I disagree with a lot of what he says, but in terms of economic policy I don't think he's any worse than Cruz, Rubio, Jeb!, GW Bush, Fiorina, John McCain, Mitt Romney, or Carson. He doesn't seem to be a supply-sider, or a 'trickle down' type, or an Austrian fanatic, or a gold bug -- all of which are severely disconnected from reality. He is a little bit obsessed with the trade deficit, which is weird. And he has obsolete views on the purpose of public debt, but that's normal for politicians. But as long as he could keep his big mouth under control in terms of foreign policy, I don't think a presidency of his would be catastrophic.
