Columbus one is nice. Has partnerships with all of central Ohio so almost everything I've requested they've had. You can also have a librarian recommend books based on your previous titles and can keep a list of books you want to check out and completed. Nice easy way to keep track

Pretty good ending to the Skyward series. Only read it because it was Sanderson, its a YA book and definitely feels as such.

Good reading in 2023. Look to read hopefully a few more in 2024.

Thanks to Truman for the Damascus Station recommendation. Both it and Moscow X are very good easy spy reads.

Was pretty disappointed by Black Mischief. I've been saving the last few Evelyn Waugh books because I've liked almost everything he's written and I'm getting to the point where I'll have read everything, and it was just like a racist caricature of Africans from someone who lived 75 years ago and probably didn't know a black person. Sucks. Feel like if you want to read stuff thats older you'll just sort of have to overlook some instances of that, but this was just too much.

Both Galapagos and White Noise were plagued by the authors trying to be profound but just being totally overhanded. Like I don't need to be beaten over the head by your message. Subtlety goes a long way imo. Also, DeLillo came across as just a pompous asshole--like do you want your readers to hate all your characters? There were a bunch of people on Goodreads who said they finished this and either literally or metaphorically threw this book at a wall. I just threw it in the trash.

I think a lot of yall would like The Innocents Abroad. Twain went on a tour of Europe and the Middle East on a steamship in the 1860s, and this is an account of everything he saw. It was very, very cool to be transported back to that time. It think it was originally published as a serial in a newspaper, and because of that, it sort of suffered from no continuous characters. THat's why it's not in the 8s.

Would love for some of yall to try Anthony Powell.

    50. In Cold Blood / Truman Capote (9.5/10)
Reads like a 10/10. Only docked a half point because of fuckery with sticking to the facts.

    49. Meditations / Marcus Aurelius (8/10)
Obviously a classic. Thought I might enjoy a little more based on all the bros that put this book high on their list. Interesting ideas from someone with a very interesting perspective but not the most compelling thing I've read.

    48. The Magician's Nephew: Chronicles Of Narnia #6 / C.S. Lewis (10/10)
Reread. I like bringing little books like this on vacation.

    47. You Only Live Twice: James Bond #11 / Ian Fleming (5/10)
Another easy one read on vacation.

    46. Taste The State: South Carolina's Signature Foods, Their Recipes, And Their Stories / Kevin Mitchell and David Shields (9/10)
Recommend for any South Carolinian. Would be 10/10 but too many typos to overlook. Are editors still a thing? This was published by an academic press.

    45. War In European History / Michael Howard (7.5/10)
Compact book that talks about the changes in warfare from the days of knights to the days of mercenaries to professional soldiers. Good but prob would have enjoyed even more if I had more background in the subject.

    44. Baseball In Columbia / Mark Bryant (8/10)
Mostly pictures. Info on all the minor league baseball teams that have called Columbia SC home through 2014.

    43. Cockfighter: A Novel / Charles Willeford (5/10)
Reprehensible main character. I assume the author is also a POS but maybe he wants us to despise his character, idk. Decently entertaining to read. Actual cockfighting is horrible stuff. I guess it still goes on in the Caribbean and southeast Asia.

    42. At The Altar Of Speed: The Fast Life And Tragic Death Of Dale Earnhardt / Leigh Montville (8/10)
A cheap little book sold at the time of Earnhardt's death but man, I enjoyed it. I'm not a NASCAR guy but you can't not know Dale Earnhardt living in this area and this filled in the parts of the legend I was missing.

    41. The Right Stuff / Tom Wolfe (10/10)
    40. Winning Every Day: The Game Plan For Success / Lou Holtz (4/10)

Trying to edit and add to that post was a disaster on mobile so adding details here:

My wife doesn’t read as many books as I do (10-12) so I read some with her since she was reading them for her book club. I did try to read some books at the library that she might also like so I could give her recommendations, but a lot ended up very, very mediocre.

some highlights on the year -

The Expanse!! Really enjoyed it! Finally got around to reading it. Great sci fi!

Wool series! Very good! Not as good as the expanse but still solid!

Check and Mate - a very uncharacteristic book for me to enjoy, but a simple romance book about a chess player. Hysterically unrealistic but weirdly I enjoyed it as much as my wife did.

Most disappointing were definitely salt, fat, acid, heat which came recommended as some amazing cooking manifesto and was just boring idk. Also Most Dazzling Girl in Berlin was awful.

As a physician, I’ll just say Outlive was fucking trash.
