This is great. Sent this to my sister who lives in Richmond. She lives between one percenters old money and swingers.
Nice, there'll be a lot going on this summer to get you acclimated to the city. Plus, you got here just in time for the biennial Monument Avenue/Confederate Statue debate!
Welcome man! Roosevelt, Alamo BBQ, and Union Market should be at the top of your list to check out. Also, Triple Crossing brewery in Fulton.
ate at Roosevelt on the first home finding trip. Very nice. Also just a few blocks from our place, so we will be back often. Heard good things about Alamo - will check out ASAP.
dawgonit -- How's the 804 treating ya? Went to Triple Crossing-Fulton last Saturday for a friend's bday. First time I'd been to that location, awesome spot. They've got a brick oven in the taproom and their pizza is . I'm a big fan of their Falcon Smash IPA, but I also really liked the Clever Girl IPA (which is admittedly similar).
loving it so far. have settled in nicely in Church Hill and love the neighborhood. I pick up beer frequently from Triple Crossing but have never had the pizza - need to try that out. I've been out of town every weekend for over a month with holidays and other stuff so glad to settle back in and keep exploring. looking forward to the Isbell/McMurtry show at Altria on 2/16
Yea, Altria Theater is the former Landmark Theater a.k.a "The Mosque" (if you're old Richmond). Altria donated like $10 million for renovations a few years back and were essentially given naming rights. Really cool old building and awesome venue for music. I'll be at Isbell as well
saw Isbell there a couple years ago - just saw john mullaney there a few months ago and he had a great rant about Altria's rebranding (of the company overall)
Triple Crossing makes the best beer in Richmond IMO. I prefer the Foushee location just because I've been going there for a while and it's closer to me but the Fulton space is great. Least well-known brewery but also really good is Final Gravity in Lakeside. Definitely recommend checking them out sometime if you haven't before. Cool little taproom with dart boards and a couple arcade games. I'll also be at the Isbell show next month. Saw him there two years ago and it was awesome.
Fun fact, at the church next door I worked on taking an interior wall out and then we craned in a huge truss to hold it all up. One of the coolest things I’ve worked on. Also I saw Lil wayne there back in 07
Zzq BBQ is opening up this spring/ summer.. I've been told it's the best BBQ in rva. They were at ardent crafts on weekends but never got a chance to go.
It’s so good. That place will be packed all the time. Lines used to be over an hour long at Ardent most Saturdays
ZZQ has its grand opening today. Going to be a madhouse so I’ll likely wait until next week to check it out but excited it’s finally opening
Friend of a friend is opening this place in Scott's Addition. Looked pretty cool from the event pictures I saw this week. https://richmondbizsense.com/2017/02/21/bowling-alley-set-to-roll-along-boulevard/
For a city that prides itself on being a "food town" of sorts, our BBQ options are pretty weak. Buzz & Neds is OK at best, and they are still living off the reputation that they once beat Bobby Flay in a rib challenge in 2007 (people forget). Alamo is generally good, but it's a small operation and inconsistent IMO. Deep Run Roadhouse is probably my favorite of the bunch, but it's not exactly a "traditional" BBQ restaurant. Most of the other places I've been to in Lakeside and/or the West End are pretty average as well. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I LOVED Bill's Barbecue growing up. Miss that place. RIP
I've had some decent stuff since moving up: Pierce's in Williamsburg and The Fishin' Pig in Farmville stand out to me. Also grabbed a damn fine bbq sandwich at a shell station outside Dillwyn awhile back. There is a general lack of real old school pit places around.
Come post in the UVA thread beforehand, resident townie JPWahoo will have all kinds of recommendations.
Buz and Ned’s is pretty meh. Good spot to grab a bite before a squirrels game but it’s not worth seeking out. Alamo BBQ tacos and a side of jalapeño Mac and cheese is my go-to but I can see people not liking it for traditional bbq. Deep Run was opened by one of the original founders of Alamo which is why the menu is pretty similar. ZZQ is definitely going to be the best in the area. Place is ridiculously good. Virginia BBQ in Lakeside has the worst brisket I’ve ever had in my life. I took one bite and threw it out.
Alamo's pulled pork was very good but their brisket was awful - for a place that markets themselves as Texas BBQ I was very jagsfan.gif will copy your order on my next visit
ZZQ was good food, but it didn’t blow me away. Really good food, maybe a little pricy, menu was a little bland.
I was underwhelmed by Buzz and Neds, but they had a tasty cold salad with cukes I think? If you're west of Richmond, The Silver Pig is a good place near Lynchburg. Carolina style, with homemade hushpuppies. Not a destination, but worth it if you're traveling and want BBQ. Pok-e-Joes in Lynchburg does some great sammiches with BBQ too. They have a bacon wrapped hotdog with pulled pork on the menu, along with straight BBQ etc.
Decent line-up for Dominion Riverrock this weekend (https://www.riverrockrva.com/event-categories/music/). Marcus King Band tonight and then The Wood Brothers Saturday night as headliners. DJ Williams is also worth catching tomorrow, he's the guitarist for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Local Richmond guy too, I try to catch him whenever he's back in town. Looking like it'll be a bit soggy unfortunately.
