Didn’t know what thread to put this in so started a new one. Is there any way that Saudi doesn’t end up hosting? Thread:
You’d think South America would riot at the idea of the 100th anniversary WC not being on their continent but the Saudis will just buy off their reps as well.
Giving up on the 2030 bid according to Marca. https://www.marca.com/futbol/2023/06/22/64949a1246163fcb878b45e0.html
I bet it was made clear that the South American bid gets 2030, the Euro bid gets 2034 and Saudi will have to wait until 2038 at the earliest.
This is how it happens https://twitter.com/philippeauclair/status/1692105109482741792?s=46&t=eaT42YHzLc-sGAKrtzafMA
Honestly I bet you see a decentralized approach to the World Cup soon. The tournament is getting too big. 4-5 different countries host the group stage, first round of knockouts and quarterfinals. Then a single nation hosts the semifinals and final.
“Hey you just made the World Cup, congrats you’re going to have to fly half way across the world in between your first and second game.”
Honestly any of those options or pairings would have been great. Spain and Portugal? Spain & Morocco? Some combination of Uruguay, Argentina & Paraguay? All are elite places to visit with incredible culture in awesome parts of the world. Just fucking pick one. So of course we get this nonsense.
I'm just saying, flying back and forth around North America is going to be a lot more travel than 1 game in Uruguay then flying over to Spain
Aren't they doing regions in the 2026 wc to cut down on travel? Regardless I really don't feel too bad for these teams flying in their private jets where they can all likely sleep on a bed or sit in a lounge chair. Let's stop acting like these guys are in coach on a regular airline.
very neat that they gave potential bidders one month to secure government funding, which surely in no way hampered bids by countries that have silly things like a democratic process involved in making state financial commitments.
100% this was intended to be for Saudi Arabia and no one else. 2 of 4 World Cups between 2022-2034 going to burgeoning soccer metropolis of the Middle East.
