just seems like we are going to try and pump Ukraine full of weapons so they can make it until after the US election

then the lines will be drawn, Ukraine will go EU but not NATO. Russia will get the coastline and minerals, Europe their cheap labor

No Poland is not going to enter Ukraine, only country seemingly considering this is France but not in a fighting role

sidenote the Polish army wouldn’t fair better in the minefields

This whole aid package should be a bridge to keep Ukraines head above water and allow them to stagnate the Russian advance until Europe gets their war industry fully rolling.

If Ukr can hold on through Christmas, hopefully Germany, UK and others can really fill the artillery and anti air gaps currently being experienced by Kiev, and if they don’t, well Putin is going to feel untouchable

Ukraine needs to mobilize 18-25 year olds. Not that I want a bunch of people to die, but the demographic argument doesn't matter if YOUR COUNTRY NO LONGER EXISTS. Zelensky needs to be honest about this.

Someone (who is unfamiliar with the latest in the conflict ) on a CFB website, asked how the conflict is going. Not sure how converting the latest on the ground into commonly understood terms (on a CFB website, again) is gross?

    Current status:
-Ukraine is losing ground daily but has not been dealt any strategic defeats. Ukrainian defense is doing well all things considered and will likely not allow, any point, Russia to sweep through or make mass gains.
-The Ukrainian 2023 offensive was a failure. There is now legitimate concern for what the long term goals for Ukraine should be. Regaining even a large portion of the lost territory seems highly unlikely unless there is a regime collapse in Russia.

Ukraine Says It Foiled Russian Plot to Kill Zelensky
The Ukrainian security services arrested two Ukrainian colonels and accused them of spying for Russia. They said the plot also targeted top Ukrainian intelligence officials.

Ukraine’s security services said on Tuesday that they had foiled a Russian plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other top military and political figures. Two Ukrainian colonels accused of participating in the plot have been arrested on suspicion of treason.

The Ukrainian domestic intelligence agency, the S.B.U., said in a statement that the plot had involved a network of agents — including the two colonels — that was run by Russia’s Federal Security Service, or F.S.B., the main successor agency to the K.G.B. According to the Ukrainian agency, the agents working at Russia’s direction were tasked with identifying people close to Mr. Zelensky’s security detail who could take him hostage and later kill him.

The agency’s statement said the other top Ukrainian officials targeted in the plot included Vasyl Malyuk, the head of the S.B.U., and Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency. The Ukrainian claims could not be independently verified.

It is not the first time that Ukraine has reported a potential assassination attempt aimed at its top leaders. Mr. Zelensky himself said in an interview with an Italian television channel earlier this year that his security services had told him of more than 10 such attempts.

General Budanov’s wife was poisoned late last year, according to the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, in an incident that led to widespread speculation that Russia was stepping up efforts to target Ukraine’s senior leadership.
The S.B.U. also reported last month that it had arrested, in cooperation with Polish security services, a Polish man who it said had offered to spy for Russia as part of a plot to assassinate Mr. Zelensky.

Russia made no immediate comment about Tuesday’s allegations.

    Washington Post article on it:
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...8ec439dc8fc006/34/88/663b5a220704581598c92d29

Ukrainian authorities said Tuesday that they have arrested two officers in the agency responsible for protecting senior government leaders and accused them of developing a plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other top Ukrainian officials — as a “gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his inauguration.

The two suspects were colonels in Ukraine’s State Protection Department, roughly the equivalent of the U.S. Secret Service, and were recruited by Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, according to Ukraine’s State Security Service.

The State Security Service, known as the SBU, announced the arrests in a post on the Telegram social media platform. The statement did not identify the suspects, and their faces were obscured in photos showing the arrests and in a subsequent video of an interrogation.

The colonels were tasked with providing the FSB with information about Zelensky and other top officials’ whereabouts and to recruit others who could directly help in the assassinations, the SBU said.

“One of the tasks of the FSB intelligence network was to search for operatives among the military close to the protection of the president, who could take the head of state hostage and later kill him,” the SBU wrote.

In addition to targeting Zelensky, the FSB also hoped to kill the head of the SBU, Vasyl Maliuk, and Kyrylo Budanov, chief of the GUR, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, the SBU said. Budanov was intended to “be eliminated” before Orthodox Easter, which was Sunday, the SBU said.

The attack on Budanov “was supposed to be a gift to Putin before the inauguration,” Maliuk said in the SBU statement. He called the operation “actually a failure of the Russian special services.”

Putin was sworn in Tuesday for a fifth term as president in an elaborate ceremony at the Kremlin.

To kill Budanov, the colonels intended to recruit an “agent” from his security detail, who would pass on the coordinates of his location to the FSB, the SBU said.

“A rocket attack was planned,” the SBU said. After this initial attack, the recruited agent was supposed to kill those who were still alive with a drone attack. “After that, the Russians planned to target [the location] with another missile … to destroy traces of the use of the drone,” the SBU said.

The two colonels were charged with treason, the Ukrainian general prosecutor’s office said in a Telegram post Tuesday. One of the colonels also was charged with “aiding in the preparation of a terrorist act.”

Both men started working with the FSB before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the SBU said.

In the video, one of the Ukrainian colonels said that, in preparation for the attacks, he received weapons, which included an anti-personnel mine and drones with explosives, which he left at an agreed-upon location on the side of the highway from Kyiv to Odessa. He also received ammunition for a rocket launcher, the SBU said.

During the course of his work with the FSB, he made contact with a person in Ukraine’s defense intelligence and was supposed to gauge “the sentiments of employees stationed at the President’s Office security” to help with future assignments.

“Starting from May 2014, payment for my work and collaboration was made through meetings abroad,” the man said. “Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the money accumulated and was transferred abroad simply to my relatives.”

Ukraine’s leadership has been the target of numerous alleged assassination attempts. Last month, Polish officials said they arrested a man on charges of being ready to pass information to Russian intelligence to assist in a possible attempt on Zelensky’s life.

On Saturday, Russia took the step of putting Zelensky on its wanted list, Russian state media reported, citing the Interior Ministry’s database, as well as the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Gen. Oleksandr Pavlyuk.

Ukraine’s intelligence services also carry out killings of adversaries, though Russia’s top leadership has not been targeted. In 2022, a car bomb killed Daria Dugina, the adult daughter of Russian nationalist Alexander Dugin. Ukraine and Russia’s intelligence service do not acknowledge any involvement in these actions, however.

Last year, the wife of GUR head Budanov, Marianna, was hospitalized after being poisoned with heavy metals, Ukrainian officials said. She recovered after a lengthy illness. Russian officials denied that they were behind the poisoning, calling such reports “routine accusations.”

Russia opening a third front is interesting, Ukraine is low on manpower so they are thinning them even further. Kharkiv has a crazy militia that stopped the best Russian army cold last time. There is no way Russia could come close to taking Kharkiv with 50,000 men, they need 400,000

if Ukraine can hold the line Russia is going to speed race through equipment/manpower at a rate not seen since the first two months of the war

I'd feel a lot better about Ukraine's position right now if they had an air force.

Right now it seems pretty clear Russia is going to win this war without an injection of better equipment. The west needed to come up with a plan to provide modern planes (*something better than 40 year old MIG 29s) the second the first Russian tank crossed the border in February 2022 -- or at least when it became obvious the Ukrainians could hold.

After the election it will be more clear , if Trump wins Ukraine is screwed . Biden winning we’ll see what direction he is going ..anywhere from closing the skies to forcing a deal.. but Russia probably just attacks again in a few years, it never ends for them if they succeed in land grabbing little by little

Yes and no. Yes in that it’s and admission that the war hasn’t worked. No in that the Russian playbook doesn’t exactly go from wing T to Air Raid depending on who the general is. They are all Russian, that’s what really matters.

I read somewhere this new guy is an economist (do not know if true) which signals that Putin is signaling that he sees victory as a matter of production rather than military strategery. Again though, all Russians. Going to be a cold winter everywhere but Moscow when this guy starts stripping entire cities for the war machine.

    WW3 here we come.

The official statement said the PM was taken to Banska Bystrica instead of the capital city of Bratislava because “an acute intervention” was necessary. Handlova is about two hours’ drive from the capital Bratislava.

Fico won a third term as Slovakian prime minister last October after running a campaign that criticized western support for Ukraine. Fico had pledged an immediate end to Slovak military support for Ukraine and promised to block Ukraine’s NATO ambitions in what would upend Slovakia’s staunch backing for Ukraine.

Ahead of the election, Fico made no secret of his sympathies towards the Kremlin and blamed “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” for provoking Vladimir Putin into launching the invasion, repeating the false narrative Russia’s president has used to justify his invasion.

Slovak prime minister in life-threatening condition after being shot, his Facebook profile says
Story by KAREL JANICEK, Associated Press
    • 3h • 3 min read
PRAGUE (AP) — Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in life-threatening condition after being wounded in a shooting after a political event Wednesday afternoon, according to his Facebook profile.

The populist, pro-Russian leader, 59, was hit in the stomach after four shots were fired outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of the capital where the leader was meeting with supporters, according to reports on TA3, a Slovak TV station. A suspect has been detained, the country's president said in a televised statement.

A message posted to Fico’s Facebook account said that the leader “has been shot multiple times and is currently in life-threatening condition.”

It said he was being transported by helicopter to the Banská Bystrica, 29 kilometers (63 miles) away from Handlova because it would take too long to get to Bratislava due to the necessity of an acute procedure.

“The next few hours will decide,” it said.
Outgoing President Zuzana Caputova, a political rival of Fico, said in a televised statement: “A physical attack on the Prime Minister is, first of all, an attack on a person, but it is also an attack on democracy. Any violence is unacceptable. The hateful rhetoric we’ve been witnessing in society leads to hateful actions. Please, let’s stop it.”

President-elect Peter Pellegrini, an ally of Fico, called the attempted assassination “an unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy. If we express other political opinions with pistols in squares, and not in polling stations, we are jeopardizing everything that we have built together over 31 years of Slovak sovereignty.”

There were reactions of shock from across Europe, and some were calling it an attempted assassination of the leader in the NATO state, although no motive for the shooting was immediately apparent.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg posted on the social media platform X that he was “shocked and appalled by the shooting.”

The shooting in Slovakia comes three weeks ahead of crucial European Parliament elections, in which populist and hard-right parties in the 27-nation bloc appear poised to make gains.

Slovakia’s major opposition parties, Progressive Slovakia and Freedom and Solidarity, canceled a planned protest against a controversial government plan to overhaul public broadcasting that they say would give the government full control of public radio and television.

“We absolutely and strongly condemn violence and today’s shooting of Premier Robert Fico,” said Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Simecka. “At the same time we call on all politicians to refrain from any expressions and steps which could contribute to further increasing the tension.”

President Zuzana Caputova condemned “a brutal and ruthless” attack on the premier.

“I’m shocked,” Caputova said. “I wish Robert Fico a lot of strength in this critical moment and a quick recovery from this attack.”
Fico, a third-time premier, and his leftist Smer, or Direction, party, won Slovakia’s Sept. 30 parliamentary elections, staging a political comeback after campaigning on a pro-Russian and anti-American message.
