Was it the food that was disappointing? I’ve always thought Hall’s’ food is good to very good, but not the best. To me, where it sets itself apart is it’s service. They can handle a chaotic party of 18 with babies, infants, and octogenarians with grace and ease. I know from experience.
Food was good. Service was weird.. there was a waiter handling all the tables around me that appeared to be tremendous. My waiter was bad. Didn't see him last 20 minutes I was there. Manager actually ended up clearing our table and then getting our check.
That’s disappointing to hear. I haven’t been in a few years. I always raved about their service more than their food, which again is also good to very good. Hopefully, your server was just a bad apple and not a sign of how things are now.
That really sucks. That certainly would be a disappointing visit. Sorry it wasn’t a better experience, because that’s honestly like 2/3 of why I recommend people go if they ask about the restaurant.
I stayed at the mills house Saturday night and got off the peninsula at 9:00 yesterday morning right in nick of time. The roads were already starting to get bad. we frequent the nexton halls a few times a year and it’s hit or miss with the service. Better than everywhere else always but sometimes lacking from the typical halls experience. The food is always good but I did get some mushroom risotto last year that was crunchy.
Locals don't go to Hyman's. There's always a line outside and I never understand why. So many good seafood places but Hyman's is not one of them.
The storm surge yesterday shifted the Yorktown about six inches in the pluff mud. First time it’s moved since Hugo.
First time ever coming here and I’ve loved it. My wife has been here for like 40 hours once before so it was basically her first time. She’s 6 months pregnant so we went extra hard on the food and damn Charleston is underrated as a culinary destination. Haven’t had a disappointing meal Got in late on Tuesday and got lucky and found two spots at the bar at Fig and was awesome. Wednesday was 82 Queen for lunch and Halls for dinner - loved both. Thursday we did fort Sumter tour, and walked into a place called Gingerline after. For dinner I did Circa 1886 tasting menu and wine pairing, my wife was jealous but she got the duck which was great too. Today, I was hungover so got out of bed at 11 and went to the Port of Call food hall which was cool. Tonight dinner at High Cotton. Glad I’m already overweight cause I would be after this trip. Great city, love the history and just walking around on my own. I was shocked at how narrow it is and how we’d end up basically across the peninsula in 15 minutes. My wife loves how the dinner spots are ones she has seen on Southern Charm so that helps too.
I need a couple casual dinner recs. Did a bunch of the nicer places in December and I'm on a different kind of trip this week. Burgers/seafood type dives/bbq (I'll go to lewis for sure).
Been a few years but tattooed moose, hometeam BBQ for wings, and Edmund oast brewing/rancho Lewis combo visit are all great and very casual.
Just making sure you know the Tattooed Moose isn’t downtown anymore. It moved to Park Circle in North Charleston. If you’re looking for places on the peninsula, Little Jack’s Tavern and Leon’s are fun casual spots. Both are owned by the same group and are less than block away from each other. Little Jack’s has a great burger and Leon’s is known for its fried chicken and oysters.
If you will be on the Folly Beach side, hit up Jack of Cups. Everything on the menu is good and rotates every 3 months. Not burgers and seafood, but is a dive bar that just finished a nice patio. It’s like Indian and Asian inspired comfort food. Anything with a curry spin is going to be delicious. Was easily my favorite place when I lived on James Island.
Home Team always delivers imo. Took the family there last night. We are doing Coastal Crust James Island and probably the Edmond Oast patio as family friendly spots. Rancho Lewis or maybe outside at Little Jack’s for a nicer meal but with kids it can be hard.
I'm trying to remember a place I went for southern fried chicken back in 2010. If I remember it was a little uptown (maybe near the port?), and was really a meat and three place. Smaller space that I think had wood panel walls. I remember ruining the shirt I was wearing because so much grease exploded out of the chicken when I took my first bite. Would love to go back next time I'm in town, if it's still open. Anyone have any ideas?
old lady died and that whole area has been transformed with new development, you wouldn’t even recognize it
That’s what I was scared of when I read your first post. Looking at google maps, the area I thought it used to be is pretty developed now so I didn’t know if I was remembering incorrectly. Makes sense now.
Staying in north Charleston. Playing a baseball tournament at Hanahan and bishop england. I'll be driving elsewhere for dinner. Is acme low country a tourist trap?
She actually retired at 90 and decided to sell the building before she died. She got offered a whole lot of money and decided to sell to a developer. Sucks for the community but good for her family after 37 years to get a big payday. She died like a year later.
Acme is fantastic. Grace and Grit is very good for a more upscale but not over the top seafood dinner.
I haven’t been to the current location, which is a great spot, but I liked it when it first opened in the original spot.
ate at SNOB last week and it was shockingly bad i wanted to go to somewhere like FIG or Husk or whatever but gf liked the menu there. big mistake. i knew it wasn't known to be one of the better restaurants anymore, but i had no idea it would be that bad.
That's a shame. I went there last time I was in Charleston and it was pretty good. But, that was about 10 years ago
Death Cab concert Friday on Daniel Island was great. Love that venue (the tennis stadium thing). Pregamed at the brewery across the street. Got free street parking along the main avenue (wife drove). Home by midnight.
Never been to SNOB. I'm sort of surprised the Hall family hasn't improved it since they took it over.
This situation where the two pedestrians were killed in a hit and run is crazy. I've read the official news stories, but anyone want to speculate how they got hit twice by different drivers 30 minutes apart?
Girls were walking in the bike lane in the road way rather than sidewalk. Assume they were drunk. Hammered driver runs them over and doesn’t stop, and then he crashes in west Ashley. Badly injured or dead girls still on side of road, don’t get noticed by the few cars driving in the area, and then another driver runs them over somehow. Assume he was also drunk.
Thanks. Side note, Post and Courier comments are such a shit show. I mean comment sections always are but they seem to have a high proportion of people who will say wild stuff using their real name on IG
Anyone been to Costa yet? Parents are coming to town and we’re taking them there. Have heard it’s amazing, but I’ve also heard it’s a rip off because all the portions are so small.
