One of the stranger story lines was how little Griffith even wanted to be there. He showed no emotion after his matches and just walked off without waiting for his coaches. He was basically the Ben Affleck smoking meme. He eventually confirmed how he was done after his quarter finals win in an interview with Flo.
157 certainly could’ve gone the other way, too. Then your guy likely takes out Teemer and you’ve got two champs at a a tournament where your returning champ doesn’t make the final.
Or even just TJ holding on vs Salazar and getting to the semis. Or Mekhi not having to see Starocci Friday morning. Pretty fun how close everyone is behind PSU.
Was KC a good host to those that attended? Didn’t imagine KC would ever be in rotation for nationals(not a huge wrestling city) so I’m curious how it went.
No chance Starocci comes back is there? Flo guys were talking about Greg K., Bo and Carter all having another year. If Cael pulls that off he’s a wizard.
I already mentioned this over the weekend but I think they come back. What is Carter gonna do next year? The only reason I think he'd have to not come back is if he decides to go pro in MMA and dedicate himself to that full time. If he wants to wrestle internationally why would he not come back?
If his knee requires surgery he'll probably need to address it after trials. It obviously makes the most sense to come back whether it's next season or the following.
Sorry for recovering covered ground. Not being a PSU guy, I’m going second hand, but I thought the idea was that he wasnt interested in being a college student anymore. I’m sure he could stay in town for NLWC but I had heard he and Bo had had enough of the college experience.
Feel like this is a pretty big get for coach john smith and he needs hamiti to AA next year. I don't want to say he's on the hot seat because he's the GOAT but OKST is down really, really bad right now and they graduate two of their three all americans, the other is going to be a senior, and it's an olympic year...
I thought I heard on the broadcast that next year is Smith's last year, but I very well could be making that up
yeah I completely forgot Coleman Scott went there tbh. he’ll take over. but my point was more that it’s the end of an Olympic cycle and 3 of the best 7 American wrestlers of all time are in their mid 30s. if you’re a big time program looking for a big time coach, how much bigger would it get than David Taylor, Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Dake, or Kyle Snyder? Snyder obviously younger than the others but at least one of these guys is gonna coach, right? And are Dake/Taylor going to commit to another cycle where they’d be wrestling until they’re 37? These guys could all be done.
Yeah Scott went there to take over. I heard that he was the next guy in Tulsa last year from a UNC connected guy.
For you guys that follow the sport closely... Has Burroughs ever mentioned an interest in coaching? No idea on how long Manning wants to do it but he's in his 60's so it's not incredibly far off I'd guess? Burroughs seems like a guy with the name, cache, results, and personality of someone who could be a recruiting machine? No idea if he'd be a good coach or even wants to go down that path
He was an assistant for a while so I assume he has some aspiration for it. I'm conflicted because I think Burroughs could be an amazing coach/recruiter, but Bryan Snyder deserves his shot to lead the team IMO. I'd be happy if either of them were named the successor, and I hope it happens sooner than later.
What makes you say that? Manning seemingly has us as a ~Top 5ish program in the country most years over the last decade hasn't he? Just ready for a shake up?
Yeah, just feel like we need something new to maybe get over the hump. Manning has been a legend here, but just want something fresh.
That could be decades. Rumors have him possibly taking over in Iowa City though. I do think he has interest but I dont think he'll do it.
Doesn’t he have a farm or large property? I assume near state college since that is where is training center is? Do we think he would leave all that for a college coaching job?
Yeah he just bought a farm this year IIRC. He'd obviously have to give that up. I'm pretty sure the M2 training center is profitable as well, not sure if he'd have to divest his interest. Iowa would have to make it worth his while for sure.
Yeah no doubt Iowa would throw a bag at him. Will be interesting to see how things go. I’d expect Brands have at least next year to try to save it with the new AD.
Our AD is no brands Bros fan at all and she wants no part in the Ferrari shitshow. Allegedly this has caused a huge rift between her and Brands. Rumor I've s heard floated is she's willing to spend upwards of a million for DT. Please God let that happen.
Yea our new AD has been great. Hoping she can make a move on Brands and Fran. She has been good for our NIL too since our last AD tried to avoid it. New training facility soon too.
All of the Iowa fans that I talked to in Kansas City were completely over the brands. I even brought up that they won a national title two years ago and should have had one that covid year and they really didn't care about that
I think the whole Ferrari thing has soured a lot of Iowa fans. Most don't want to see them at Iowa at all. Anyone from the entire family. A lot of fans are pretty pissed about this season and how none of the wrestlers seem to be developing. Even with the wrestlers that were suspended, they wouldn't have really competed. Spencer Lee is best thing for Brands, and you all see how they managed his situation.' Edit: tbf, I'm pretty ignorant on wrestling stuff, but read our wrestling forum and try to watch a decent amount of matches.
Hate them. I was excited about the hire initially but he can fuck right off these days. I also hate Morningstar. Every single one of our wrestlers wrestles like him. No fucking offense. I honestly pay more attention to Schwab at UNI these days. Good dude and he's got them on the upswing.
Same, pretty consistent message of they’re over them. The tide is turning on coaches who’s whole thing is the super hard grind.
Friday afternoon between sessions we went to the Big Sky Pbr bar when it opened at 4. Hawkeye wrestling club was wrapping up their private social as the doors opened to the public. We talked to a lot of them, but somehow ended up at a table where they were trying to perform surgery on one of the dudes fingers. He got his fingertip caught between the window and car on his Q8 (when the doors open the windows go down slightly then go back up when closed). It was completely black and swollen as hell. They were trying to stab through the nail with a knife to release the pressure. We had a nurse in the group because my idiot friend brought his wife, but she was able to get the knife behind the nail and blood shot everywhere. The dude ended up paying for our drinks (someone said he had sold something to Microsoft and was loaded Idk) but we had a hell of an afternoon with them. The experience was wild, but I wonder if this is just a normal #Iowa Hawkeyes gathering
Sounds pretty typical. You're telling me your weekends don't always involve some sort of medical shenanigans?
this baby still going on about Jordan saying the wrestler should target Carter's bad leg. Can't remember Jordan talking himself up once, fucking weird
has he never listened to any announcers in any sports before? Any time a player is injured the announcer will call it out and say they'd go right at them
Seems like it but made it weirder saying JB is using Penn State’s success to boost himself whatever, onto basketball and bourbon and City waxing that ass tomorrow morning
