Anything in particular I should start with? I've listened to some of their stuff in the past but it's never really grabbed me. But a lot of my favorite artists I had to give another shot.
Coast is my favorite album of theirs, and one of the better country albums of the last 10 years, barely a bad song on it. Their later stuff tends to stretch genres a little more but Suzannah, Oklahoma City, Little Bird, Mountain Girl, What a Shame would be some of my favorites. Theyre also elite tier road trip music.
I’m usually disappointed with their setlists. Seems like there are multiple songs I assume they would play but are left out of the setlist.
Got my tickets for Turnpike and the Avett Bros in Feb. in Little Rock. My two favorite bands playing together, so I couldn’t pass it up. Billy Strings in Nashville the next night. Quite a weekend.
Went to Shane Smith’s ugly Christmas sweater show last night in Austin. Other than them and the crowd being dressed like goofs, hardly had any Christmas related stuff. Strongly suggest anybody in Dallas, SA or Houston with time this weekend go check them out. These guys are awesome live, it was a ton of fun.
My dad helps book music for a venue in west Tennessee and has booked Chris knight and ward Davis for 2023.
Lotta good music originating from Alabama lately: Red Clay Strays Drayton Farley New guy named Jason Isbell
The way BJ smiles it seems like every picture is the happiest moment in his life. He seems like a great dude.
Not sure how many listen to him, but got tickets to Pony Bradshaw in Nov. super excited to finally see him
I don’t know a ton of their backstory but like American Aquarium. I agree he seems like a good guy, but just looking at their wiki, it seems like they’ve had about twenty members. Any idea what that’s about?
I don’t. I know they tour a TON so maybe just attrition from a tough road schedule? They haven’t really hit it “big” so maybe folks leave for financial reasons? I could see BJ being super particular and that pushing people away
AA started as a college band but it was really BJs band. They started off as a hard partying good time band but then BJ got clean and sober. That greatly changed the path the band was on and he made changes. Since then it's been clear that it's his band with a supporting cast. He talked awhile back about ending the American Aquarium band and doing more solo stuff but he has gathered a big following under that umbrella so I think he's reluctant to let it go.
got really into this genre lately. can anyone recommend some bands /artists so I can add some more good shit to my playlist? I really like Hayes Carll
some of the true "red dirt" OG's to start with would be Chris Knight, Robert Earl Keen, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, and Pat Green. Some of the modern big names in the genre are Turnpike Troubadours, Silverada (fka Mike & the Moonpies), Shane Smith & the Saints, Ryan Bingham (dont bother listening to anything later than Junky Star), Flatland Cavalry and Wyatt Flores. That's not even getting into the artists from Appalachia who generally have a distinct sound but are definitely included in the umbrella--Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, etc. If Hayes Carll is your starting point I'd probably recommend adding some dudes like Sturgill, Jason Eady, Boland, Knight, Bingham and Corb Lund first.
Awesome thanks. I’m guessing some of these are in the umbrella but not real red dirt country. I also like William Clark Green, Charlie Robinson, Whiskey Myers(really they sound more like southern rock than country to me), some Jamey Johnson songs. I like select few Turnpike songs, not a fan of most Cross Canadian Ragweed songs, and don’t like Silverada. Love Sturgill. Any recs based on the stuff I like?
Jason Eady. This is going to turn into me posting people I like in an unorganized stream of consciousness way
