Some people are "good" coaches because they were in places that could easily exploit the rules (Hoover/CC). Simpson that coached at Buford is another great example. Went something like 0-10 the year before Buford hired him, then all of a sudden he's a phenomenal coach that rarely loses a game. Reality was he was an average coach that built their dynasty by limiting school size and being very selective about who they let in. Easy to dominate when you're picking from a population of close to a million while the teams you play are getting their talent from areas with 15-30k max.
Yes, and the problem lies with the states choosing to protect some schools/coaches and cracking down on others. Who you know determines how you're treated in HSFB
Game there. I think his other family was NE. Fort Payne maybe so surprised they aren’t making the trek up there.
Welp, take that win off the board, boys https://www.al.com/sports/2023/10/2...eams-will-have-to-forfeit-football-games.html
One of the other schools mentioned, coosa Christian, was where he was briefly before jumping to Pell city
Who can tell me about Tift County HS in GA? Had a really successful coach from my area try to turn that around and heard he stepped down recently and is looking to return to Michigan. Give me some good gossip on Noel Dean
It means a little more down there than it does in Michigan. tried running the triple with South Georgia kids. did some admirable things off the field. Never really understood how things operate down here. to be fair, Tift should be good but there is a lack of cohesion in the community and they aren’t as all in as some of their counterparts in region 1
20 years ago he was running the veer up here, but he evolved here anyway. Ended up having two of the best HS QBs I've ever seen with Mark Caitlin and Keith Nichol (lost out to Sam Bradford at OU and transferred to MSU where he was a WR). His offenses then were shotgun and spread, but with a lot of QB runs
Can't imagine the shock of a Michigan guy when witnessing the insanity of south Georgia football for the first time.
-Extremely basic version of the triple option -Inability to draw in surrounding area talent, as many of the smaller schools are good enough to not have to worry about losing kids to them. -Dysfunctional school system -Other teams in their region are just as, if not more, talented
I love that he's paying people to take tests for players but he's getting fired for not being a yes man
Small southern town football politics are wild. My college roommate is a head coach for one. He took over after there head coach was left a month before the season and took half his coaches with him. So he hired a bunch of retired coaches in the area to help for the season and made the playoffs but exited first round. Whole town was at war, so the school board announced a formal search for a new coach. Half the town loved him bc he was a local and did things the “right way” and made “kids to to upstanding men”. The other half wanted a “proven winner” who wouldn’t lose in the playoffs or other rivals. It was fun to follow on Facebook but man I felt terrible for my buddy bc he was getting taken to the ringer over an impossible situation. He ended up getting the job though and making some new hires and then proceeded to lose in the first round of the playoffs again which has started the town wanting him fired again.
It sucks big time. My son goes to school where football is king (I'm not sure there's a school it's not in the south tbh). Anyway it ruins the physical education department. It's filled with chances who don't at shit except coach football and sorry with underage girls. He's in middle school and wanted to take weight training and they haven't done shit in months because the coach is "ordering format equipment" or "spring practice is starting." And yeah if you win but don't win enough, you're out. They don't care if you're not breaking rules
What’s wild is seeing people who graduated and where friends with him highschool and college just absolutely berate him online for no reason and then post their pictures from Sunday school the next day. I know all the people in that town and most of them don’t know jack shit about football or developing kids.
I cannot imagine caring about high school sports like this as an adult to where they’d try taking down a coach for losing in the playoffs.
Rush getting fired for the one good deed he actually does in making sure his players eat a real meal before school is impressive
rush propst is an american icon and i cannot wait to see him lead these fine young men from pell city back to the state playoffs
