The point of sport is to watch men or women pull of incredible athletic feats and applaud them for doing so. Like...watching Colorado in this year's tournament was enjoyable. I wasn't sad when they lost to Marquette, and I wasn't excited when they beat Florida. My actual life...goes on, and neither game effected any other moment of my day. Y'all need to grow up if you're sports teams are causing you genuine angst or anger.
Posting on a super niche college football message board while simultaneously being way too cool to care about sports is quite the juxtaposition
I like watching my team. If they keep winning, cool, I get to watch them more. A title means nothing to me. I hope all the players are in it for that since they're the ones actually doing it.
Is it really a college football message board at this point? I was here when the original main board started. Then I was still in my early twenties and was still someone who has visceral reactions to sports. I have three kids. I've been married and divorced. I went through struggles with mental illness. There's just things that REALLY matter in this world. Sports are just an escape for a few hours, maybe more. I don't know what else to tell all of you.
If you don't care if they win or lose and titles mean nothing to you are you sure you're a fan of those teams? Why are you spending time watching less interesting matchups for "your team" if you don't even care about the result? You aren't required to be a fan of a team to enjoy sports. Why keep of the facade of being a fan of a team when you're clearly not?
I'm a fan of BBQ ribs. Once a week I eat BBQ ribs, but I find it odd that people drive further for "better" ribs than they can get at TGI Friday's. While I'm eating the ribs, it's the same to me whether they're "good" or "bad." I don't understand people preferring different sauces. Don't they know what's happening in Gaza? With the Uyghurs?
Awesome to see Newton play great in the title game again. Will forever be a local legend Rodney Terry couldn't even bother driving 10 minutes from campus to recruit him. Can't believe that dumb shit failed upwards into the Texas job
This is actually funny because I work in BBQ...I'm not going to drive an hour to get better ribs though. There has to be a better reason to make that trip than just food.
does creating a core happy memory that is often shared with family or friends improve a life? I can’t eat the Nats 2019 title but I do get an endorphin rush thinking about the sound of a ball hitting a foul pole.
But I do agree with the premise somewhat I can’t be bothered to let the result of a sporting event ruin my day. It sucked when FSU didn’t get into the playoff, but it is what it is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s a form of entertainment that I get to enjoy with friends
I understand what you are saying and completely agree. I used to be so tied to sports but now barely watch outside of the big event games. Watching KU play WVU on a Big Monday does nothing for me anymore but I used to love it. I saw you said you struggled with mental illness and while I don’t have that same story my wife does. I think sometimes when you’re dragged through the absolute bottom of the barrel and survive it puts a new lens on things, or at least it has for me.
Stop caring about what others do, weirdos. You want to cry? Go for it. You want to clap and move on? That's cool too. There's no right or wrong way to celebrate a happy moment.
I think sports are a very strong cultural tie in your community. It may sound quaint, but after four years of living out of state, one of the primary reasons I was happy to come back home to Alabama was so that I would have people around me to talk Tide and Braves with. They give us a reason to share joy with the people around us. There’s a great deal of personal enjoyment to be gotten from team success that boosts the mood of those around you.
It’s a lot of fun hanging with friends, joking around, talking strategy, and having silly arguments while watching games. Especially if my team is winning. A little less so if they are losing. It’s fun to cheer and celebrate and yell in frustrating at a tv in the moment. Getting actually upset at a game and acting all pissy afterwards bc your team lost or feeling like you’re a hardo and super cool bc your team won is pretty lame. I think that is what The Subspace Mariner is trying to express.
Always love these converations where people treat rooting for teams the way they treat tax season The IRS is not going to garnish your sports joy
I cry every time the cowboys get knocked out of the playoffs but that’s just because a) I know my delivery driver will be late b) that means it’s the holiday season
there’s definitely some cheap likes to be had here about it also being cool if you want to banish your spouse to the kitchen during games, but I’m better than that
When Clemson won it all the first time, I did a very respectable internal first pump. Then I called my dad who was sitting on the other goal line and we nodded at each other in silence while everyone around us celebrated and then we rushed to the car to beat the traffic.
A few weeks ago I rented a mountain house to spend the weekend with my family and the family of one of my childhood friends that lives in Florida. My brother, wolfpck came up for the day on Saturday who also lives out of town. It would have been a fun hang regardless of what was going on. However, it just so happened that NC State was playing UNC in the ACC championship game and by some miracle pulled off the win. First ACC championship in my life and I got to spend it with my best friend and brother, all 3 of us born and raised in Raleigh, NC and life long NC State fans. Man, that is a core happy memory that I'll have for the rest of my life. In 20 years I'll think back on that night and how much fun we had together so yea, it made my life better.
Same. The fact I merely pout instead of act like a deranged drunk idiot just shows how much Ive grown.
i definitely don’t care when my teams lose in the playoffs. Definitely doesn’t bother me for several days / weeks
it’s 2024 and there are a billion options to watch a (regular season, probably inconsequential - now even more so with playoff expansion) game that don’t involve nuking half of the pleasant weather weekends for your social circle
I enjoyed the thoughtful fall weddings involving my college buddies. we don't need to compress all weddings into spring and summer
As a fan of a team that had the most soul crushing WS loss known to man and was a perennial loser, winning the WS made my life more enjoyable. Yes.
Character growth comes from suffering, please note how bad every poster associated with teams that win a lot is. I thank God for giving so many of you so much, and me so little.
Cryer and Roberts both confirmed they’re back at Houston next year. Still wonder who our PG will be, but heavy rumor of Dedan Thomas or Will Taylor. But needing Shead to announce he is going pro first before they confirm. Good chance UH runs back 4 out of 5 starters, while Tugler and Arceneaux are back from injuries.
There is an idea of a sports fandom. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me. Only an entity. Something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simply am not there.
