Surprised he's getting back into coaching D1. I think he'll do well in the MVC. An easy guy to root for
I'm curious if a coach in a P5 league has ever been retained after going winless in an entire season of conference play
I can give you the pièce de résistance for your question: 2015-16 Boston College football and basketball both went winless in ACC play and both programs retained their coach
Not surprising BC wanted to give their hires time to build, given they’re in the toughest conference in America.
Seems like it wasn’t too long ago that Al Skinner had things rolling pretty good at BC. Didn’t he get fired under kind of nebulous circumstances or am I completely misremembering?
jared dudley and craig smith teams were awesome will never forget tyrese rice dropping 30 on us in the first half one year
I don’t think it the circumstances were nebulous, everyone was just surprised that they fired him. the rumors at the time were that he was lazy wrt recruiting, didn’t really watch prospects on the summer circuit etc. but he was a good coach and I bet if you gave them the choice again, they’d keep him. He also had a good eye for undervalued players, Reggie Jackson didn’t have any other high major offers for example (as I remember it).
BC firing Skinner is akin to when Nebraska fired Bo Pelini thinking they could level up. Guy went to 7 tourneys in 13 years and won his conference twice. They haven't been back to the tournament since.
it was dumb but in the long run they would've still fallen off like every other northeastern program joining the conference
Looking ahead to next year's carousel and potential openings Indiana FSU ASU Iowa Missouri UCF Minnesota? Wake? UNLV? NAU hopefully Seems all those coaches are probably feeling the heat now or will be if next year doesn't go well Northeastern and Bill Coen will probably part ways too I'm guessing unless they're way better
Minny overachieved this year and seem like they are on the right track with Johnson. Would be shocked if he was canned next year. I’d say Williard at Maryland should be on this list. They can’t be that bad again.
If the roster returns (specifically Garcia, Christie, and Payne), I think they should be a tourney team next season and he'd be fine in that scenario, but there is still a sizable contingent in the Gopher fanbase that is done with Johnson. If he doesn't make the tournament next season, I could see him being let go.
No need to lash out just because no one wants your 5’ shirtless freak of a coach and you’re stuck with him
No need to lash out against your fellow short king just because he doesn’t make people vomit when he takes his shirt off
