every episode causes me to reflect for a while. it's been a long time since a show has made me do that. i don't know if i've ever seen a show that causes that response in every episode. it's the definition of thought-provoking.
trini 2 da bone I'm in the process of moving so i was watching on a smaller tv and immediately squinted when he started talking and had to get up to make sure i saw him right
Pretty wild they got Liam Nielsen to do that. Idk what next season has in store, but I feel like it would have been better to maybe do a season of these anthology eps then a season of the actual plot/characters
especially since it’s a true story. also worth noting this was the first episode with the Donald Glover/Hiro Murai writer/director combo since “Teddy Perkins”
I had my first "What's with the blackface" moment in Chadronne, Switzerland this week. This was in my host Airbnb next to the sauna (middle). I addressed it to him and he wrote a lengthy apology and said he would remove the poster. Nevertheless, I immediately thought of the show when I stumbled upon it.
I’ve enjoyed the season as a whole but the last two have been outstanding. My favorite moment of the season came in New Jazz when Darius doesn’t have enough money for the space cake or whatever and says something like “I leave it to fate,” which of course means Al is gonna pay for him.
I was trying to pitch this show to my BIL recently who gave up after a few episodes bc he expected it to be more comedy than surrealist. And I realized I sounded like a crazy person bc I chose the barbershop episode to highlight the comedy of the show. “So, Paper Boi goes to get his haircut and his barber Bibby takes him on a series of errands instead where he gives a kid a haircut, steals some lumber, offers him a half eaten Wings & Things from Zaxbys…”
The Moonpie ep was probably my favorite. But I think the anthology eps have been better than the main plot episodes. I think maybe because it's hard to get into a groove with our main characters with the eps being so broken up. I get the criticisms of this season, and I think theyre valid. But Im still enjoying it. Doesn't bother me that much.
I don’t know why I don’t post in this thread more because I watch it weekly and frequently rewatch but I just wanted to mention that Lakeith’s performance in Teddy Perkins deserved an Emmy nom. I love all the characters but Darius is used most as comic relief and for him to play it straight and show such a wide range of emotions while Glover is in insane makeup as Teddy Perkins was perfect acting iyam.
I've distanced myself from labeling this a comedy. Sure some parts are funny. But it's definitely more surrealism/drama than comedy. Some of the criticism that this show receives is unwarranted because people want more "Erin and the gang go on a wacky adventure". The show was never attended to be that IMO, especially with the lengthy hiatus. This video gives a good explanation of Atlanta and shows/films like it.
I believe Glover’s initial pitch to FX was something like if David Lynch made a show about an up-and-coming rapper
or Spoiler all episodes this season actually occurred in the same universe but not in order. the post credits scene in e10 occur prior to e1, where earn was dreaming. the other anthology episodes occur in Atlanta though not in order, and the europe episodes occur in no specific order. white earn is boat man from e1 and the dude who shoots himself in the reparations episode
Spoiler Didn't white Earn not get his bag from the hotel because he offed himself in the reparations episode?
That therapy scene was so beautiful. The lighting, their faces, the body language. Man I love this show.
That was Donald Glover's Emmy submission episode and maybe the best acting I have ever seen from him.
I don’t think I have to say anything about Episode 2 I think it will speak on its own for a long time. that being said, episode one was a real treat for me. Paying tribute to DOOM while using Earl Sweatshirt as his rapper voice was just so cool and the scavenger hunt that lead to Blue bloods funeral (Al all the while thinking it would be a concert and he wasn’t really dead) was just perfect, man. That’s not to mention the other wolf events that lead everyone back to each other in the end. Atlanta and Reservation Dogs are such great shows
