talk about a fucking unnecessary fumble. indy gets clark. unprecedented attention to your random ass WNBA team. And that's how he starts out as covering them for the city's major paper. would be hilarious if they just replace him with a younger female sportswriter in a few months
From social media -- I love that everyone is so concerned about WNBA salaries now but it is also extremely evident that many of you don’t know or follow the league closely. WNBA players make between $70,000-$250,000 on average. Now let’s break that down further. They play about 40 games/year over 4 months. This is a summer league right now. ESPN negotiated a TERRIBLE TV deal a few years back and they need a new one to increase their salaries and change their travel situation. The league is still very young and new. If we are comparing it to the NBA, the NBA didn’t become as successful as it is now within its first 30 years. So the WNBA is moving in the right direction. If you’d like to support these women 1. Buy tickets, go to games, and bring friends 2. Buy player merch and jerseys (especially the black players) 3. Watch as many games as possible. Increased viewership is so important to negotiating a new TV deal 4. Follow your favorite college player to the pros
No fucking shit, Sherlock It wasn’t nonprofitable for 25 years though. I am absolutely an advocate for the women here, but they need to stop with talking points like that. What the WNBA needs is massive fanbase growth, something which this rookie class, headlined by Clark, can generate if the older players don’t get in the way. The TV deal is terrible because the product hasn’t given them the negotiation room to make it better. It’s equivalent to the argument that “the league needs better advertising”. If it will generate views, the advertising will come.
A lot of people on my feed were sharing the graphic comparing Caitlin Clark's salary to Wembyana so I guess this post provides some context to those people. I get $13mm looks crazy next to $100k but yeah
Clark’s rookie salary is probably proportional to the highest WNBA salary in the same way Wemby’s is to LeBron and Giannis. The entire WNBA payroll is only like $13mm and they still can’t generate a profit. Even worse, you have someone like Lisa Leslie, who should absolutely know better, suggesting to Draymond that the players should give more of their own money to WNBA players when they already subsidize the league. It’s why I get discouraged by people like Taurasi and Swoopes already trying to downplay or denigrate Clark, who has a legitimate opportunity to be a bellcow to get them what they’ve always wanted.
Taurasi only said that because draft picks arent given the right to a roster spot in the WNBA. You have to fight your way on to a team and prove your worth. There are plenty of top picks not even on the team in 1-2 seasons or even their rookie season. Charli Collier was the #1 pick in 2021 and hasnt played in the league since 2022. Nothing is a given.
Watched her when UT came to play Bama my sophomore year and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone that large move so gracefully. Best female player I’ve ever seen live by a mile.
The turnaround for rookies is nuts in the W. The title game was what, two weeks ago? Preseason starts May 3
Lol Puma dumb as fuck. Vastly underestimating the purchasing power of young girls. Nike will make that back in two years at most.
Rising tide lifts all boats. Once they see that Clark money start rolling in, they’ll take a chance on some of the other stars.
If done right, that offense can be a lot of fun plus you got NaLyssa Smith and Kelsey Mitchell they are still likely a .500 team at best this season
It’s too bad she couldn’t play through what should be a uniquely interesting season, but her reasons are more than understandable.
Watching the stream. Really wanted to watch Chicago vs Minnesota EDIT: someone is live streaming at the game
