I have no idea wtf a Ctein is... Anyway - noticed this on the NYT Best Seller's List. Knocked out the first 10 chapters on the way home. It's a quick read and really good so far. Some of you should read it so we can talk about it. Cool? Cool. The year is 2066. A Caltech intern inadvertently notices an anomaly from a space telescope—something is approaching Saturn, and decelerating. Space objects don’t decelerate. Spaceships do. A flurry of top-level government meetings produces the inescapable conclusion: Whatever built that ship is at least one hundred years ahead in hard and soft technology, and whoever can get their hands on it exclusively and bring it back will have an advantage so large, no other nation can compete. A conclusion the Chinese definitely agree with when they find out. The race is on, and an remarkable adventure begins—an epic tale of courage, treachery, resourcefulness, secrets, surprises, and astonishing human and technological discovery, as the members of a hastily thrown-together crew find their strength and wits tested against adversaries both of this earth and beyond. What happens is nothing like you expect—and everything you could want from one of the world’s greatest masters of suspense https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24611668-saturn-run
I cant put this down. Loving it so far, even though it's still in table setting mode Through Chapter 16 Spoiler -I cant help to compare this to Seveneves. It's somewhat similar in that they are racing to build a spaceship and are against the clock. - I think he does a good job of explaining the science in concise way, that adds to the story and doesnt get bogged down - I like Sandy as a character, but his backstory is pretty weak. War hero/badass/cameraman, who is now a stoner and intern just because? Im overlooking it, but that's p bad character development imo. - I think theyre going to falsely blame Fang-Castro for sabotage.
Finished Spoiler - Wurley reminds me of a little bit of Hal from 2001 - Those sneaky Chinese with their LSD - LOL @ anti vaxxers still fucking things up in 2068 - Knew sandy was up to something with how smug he was. That was a cool way to keep the data with out being detected. - Loved the epilogue and bringing back Rebecca. This book was awesome. Highly recommended if you like Sci-fi. Thought the Author's Notes at the end was great too. They explained a lot of the hard science behind and how it shaped how they wrote the story that RonBurgundy would probably find interesting Never read anything by Sandford before, but will be checking out other stuff. 4 out of 5
Just finished yesterday, thought it was really good. I'm a huge Sandford fan though, have been reading the Prey series since middle or high school.
I just got to the part where: Spoiler They flip to do the deceleration maneuver and everything goes haywire I'm really enjoying this book. As was said earlier, the science is explained in a way for the lay person to understand in such a way that it doesn't bog down the story.
Truman Spoiler I don't recall Crow ever discovering who the Chinese spy was on the ship. It seemed like a pretty big storyline to go unsolved
Spoiler I agree it's big to be left unsolved. I forget the specifics, but does it really matter though? The spy obviously was a good one and was able to sabotage the ship/crew. Still Sandy was able to save the data and make it retrievable. Assuming the spy never made it off the ship, and if he did - he wouldnt know about where in orbit Sandy left the data, right? As I said, I cant remember all the specifics, but I think Im on the right track
Finished two nights ago, really enjoyed. Regarding the spoiler Spoiler they found out who it was, it's in the last exchange between Crow and Sandy
