Relative to other TDL acquisitions, that’s a massive jump in odds. Granted, that may be more a narrative on TDL acquisitions in the first place but he has clearly been a home run so far. 2% jumps in individual team Stanley Cup odds are pretty substantial in themselves too considering the very top teams are only hovering at ~10%.
it makes sense, but after 30 years of watching hockey I don’t think I realized + - doesn’t factor in power plays until just now
Arguably biggest game to determine a playoff spot so far is Detroit at Washington, many circled this game before the season
Funny example that shows how worthless it is as a stat: Gaudreau led the league in the stat his last year in Calgary. The next year in Columbus he was 946th out of 951. It's a complete team and circumstance stat and nothing more.
Whole bunch of discourse on NHL twitter today regarding Hyman's season i.e. how much is him, how much is McDavid. I'm kinda torn. Are his goal totals probably inflated quite a bit due to playing with McDavid? Yes. Pat Maroon once scored 27 playing as McDavid's backboard for a year. But then again, a whole bunch of other guys have played with McDavid, and no one not named Draisaitl has ever scored anywhere close to that amount.
There’s something to be said about those role players who can uniquely play alongside the skill sets of the absolute best players. That said, we also can’t pretend that they’re play drivers by themselves. I see Hyman similar to Chris Kunitz, in that regard. Potentially even a better version of Kunitz. But let’s not act like he’s a point per game player without the elite linemate(s). There was an interesting claim made by (I think) Elliotte Friedman that Hyman is the best free agent signing of the last decade. If you look at it from a value perspective, maybe. But in terms of overall play and talent level, Artemi Panarin is the way better player. Obviously a much higher cap hit though.
If we are talking value. Carter Verhaeghe wants a word. 2 years at 1 million AAV 2 years at 4.16 AAV with another year left. similar point totals with a lot less PP time. I’ll never forgive Tallon for losing Panarin
It was Lebrun and there are a few that were better. He’s probably the best mid range FA signing but you guys already mentioned a better player and value. Hyman has maximized his talent and opportunities, but theres some overrating of him the last few days.
Definitely a combo of McDavid being McDavid and Hyman (As far as non-superstar players go) being about as perfect a fit playing with McDavid as you could find.
He’s also 31 with 4 years left on his contract. It’s not going to age well with the type of game he plays.
The guy just scored 50 goals for the first time and that absolutely deserves to be celebrated. But then a major media figure decides to make an outrageous hyperbolic claim and immediately the player begins to be seen as overrated. It’s okay for us to celebrate a guy or an achievement without going overboard with it. Great job by Hyman and he’s shown he can be a perfect complement for McDavid. No more, no less. Artemi Panarin just scored 100 points for the first time. That’s awesome. It doesn’t make him a top 3 player in the league though. Same story for Pastrnak.
Panthers just completely pissed down their legs the last 5 minutes and probably cost themselves the division
It wasn’t exactly show tape for aspiring goaltenders. Both goalies seemed allergic to make a big save in the third
Cautiously optimistic. Regardless they are a hell of a lot more fun to watch than the last couple years.
Seems to be happening quite a bit lately. Bob shrinks as the stakes get higher. Stolarz should be playing more
Probably but a little too much term is a norm with free agency. Assuming he has two more good years followed by a drop off he’ll still be a very good signing overall. Tweets like Lebrun’s calling him the best signing of the decade are a stretch, but it has been a great signing for Edmonton.
He didn't even start the playoffs as the starter. Yes he went on a heater but look at the two postseasons prior.
wasn't bad in 21-22. had a bad 3 games in 20-21 for sure. he's not perfect, but never heard him described as a guy who shrinks. Stolarz is having a good season but the guy is the definition of a journeyman.
Oh sure. But the story behind that signing was always great value yearly but the back end will hurt. Hence why the praise for the signing is so silly. This was always going to be the good years.
Stolarz has been one of the best #2s in the year. Stolarz should be playing more down the stretch to keep Bob fresh, but that’s it.
Stolarz is also about to have the most games started in a season of his career at like 30 years old so I wouldn't be in a rush to run him out there all that more often.
The results don’t matter for the panthers right now outside of being as fresh and healthy as possible for game 1.
Canes fans are struggling to grasp this lately. Losing to the Pens last night, while not ideal, just doesn’t matter that much right now.
Well this years presidents trophy, if it’s in the east, would be a pretty significant advantage to play WC2 than Atlantic #3.
I have yet to see anything down the stretch where I’d be concerned over a 7 game series. Not guaranteeing they win but the way they are playing is totally fine. If anything im excited of that Verhaeghe wrister being in playoff form.
I don't track this so don't write this one in pen but I believe the only team with a -20 GD to make the playoffs since 2000 is 2011-2012 Florida, who won their division with a -24 Edit: I've been Banksed!
The detroit broadcast had a graphic with that info, but I can't find a screen grab. I think they would have the worst GD of the cap era
That Buffalo 1% playoff chance might end up 0% after that disaster. Four goals in 6 minutes against Ottawa???
