On the surface fields is a top 20-25 QB who is a worthy asset, I think what kills him is he’s top 20 in the first 3/4 of the game and then is around 30th late in the game. The market for a top 20-25 QB (thats debatable BTW, his passing stats aren’t any better than Trubisky and Mariotta) that folds and plays worse late in games I’m sure wasn’t lucrative.
So at this point I would consider the following positions “Need” QB Edge WR 1.1 Williams - USC 1.9 Turner - Bama 3.75 Franklin - Oregon
I think my ideal would be trading down a couple times to 15 or so. Add 2 more picks before 75. Maybe look something like Verse, one of the MU/Tex DTs, a WR, C @ 75, then whatever falls in the 4th. Also think they should give Clowney a 1 yr deal for an extra body.
What's your take on the OL? Have to reevaluate with a real offense/QB or just good enough it doesn't justify taking a tackle at 9 over a bigger need?
Lot of new mocks have the bears trading down (often twice) to recoup some picks in R2/R3. Hard to argue with that. But if they pounce on Carter/Verse or certainly one of the top 3 wideouts at 9 bc they think they will be studs for years to come, I wouldn’t argue with it. Interior OL is improved thru trade and FA, but still hard to say it is better than adequate. Adequate is how I would describe the OL as a whole. Who deserves a long term deal? For that matter, who was the last OL the Bears had under contract who was deserving? (Wright showed well as a young rookie but still a lot to prove). If Alt/Olu is there at 9 and they see a long term solution I think you grab em. Said this before in this thread, if you nickel and dime the roster with late picks and journeyman FAs, expect the Caleb experience to go exactly like the Justin experience did.
Read somewhere that they don’t see Poles moving on from Braxton because that was his project, I think WR or DE at 9.
Agreed. I want impact offensive players. The best WR or best OL. In an ideal world we trade down enough to grab JPJ and recoup a third to grab a speedy WR. These patchwork OL signings should be depth/rotation not the hopeful starters.
The biggest issue with our OL was interior. Never felt OT was a huge need. I think Jones is good enough. At least for another season. It feels like Edge is the biggest need and lined up for perfectly for us to nab the best of the bunch at 9. Can’t see us taking a WR at 9 tbqh… but I would 100% take one of Harrison or Nabers at 9. If it’s Odunze left at 9 give me an edge
Daniel Jeremiah gave (imo) a compelling defense of the Fields trade on his pod today. In short, the locker room is pro-Justin so getting it done well before the players return to Halas Hall in April for workouts gives enough runway for them to accept that Caleb is now their guy and there won’t be any hand wringing. Plus, he said the Darnold trade really deflated what the league thought a failed 1st round QB was really worth. There were simply no takers for Justin as a starter, thus the same comp as what NE got for Mac, with an upside of a 4th round in return.
Daniel could've skipped the locker room portion of that explanation. These are grown men, they know its a business.
Oh he'll give it up, just pointing out that Allen wore 13 for the Chargers too. Does he give it up for a rookie qb?
I gotta track down where I saw it, but I’m pretty sure Caleb is on record he’s not going to wear 13 in the pros. I think Keenan will get it.
DL/WR going to get a look. I sure wouldn’t mind a Mitchell and Murphy combo if they find a trade back,
From a production and athletic standpoint, the best edge in the class is Latu from UCLA. But he has a massive red flag medically and who knows what teams will do with that. The other top guys are athletic but meh production. I would probably go Turner, Verse and Chop after Latu. I think Turner is the safest bet of the bunch to go to Chicago because he fits the mold Poles likes at Edge. The only 3Tech i'm even entertaining at 9 is Murphy from Texas. Smaller in stature but production and athletic numbers are off the charts.
the more I watch latu the more I’m surprised there’s not more hype. Obviously all about his medical. I haven’t looked at their scores but poles likes those guys that score high physically
Latu is I think a level above the rest. He's just has serious medical questions. I bet some of the lack of hype comes from those concerns.
Turner also turned 21 last month, Latu turns 24 at the end of December. Coupled with his neck fusion surgery, would prefer Turner. I think Atlanta probably is on him though.
Nothing wrong with scheduling a visit with a prospect that is seen as the best at his position in a long time Also saw a mock today where AZ traded down from 4, then back up to 8 to take Odunze. Thought that actually made a lot of sense since both AZ and ATL have a lot of work to do with their rosters. It had ATL taking Verse at like 12 (Denver moved up to take McCarthy) (I share that bc Turner is my #1 preference at 9)
Four QBs will go top 9. Could see JJ on the board at 9 and teams salivating to take him, giving us a bag.
Scouting is difficult and you could make the argument Hester delivered less on offense than those guys predicted and he still made the HOF
It feels more political vs indecisive. I would imagine going over the top for a prospect that turns into a bust wont go over well in future conversations... if you have a job still. But the breakdowns were correct about Hester having the biggest upside and a safe floor with his special teams ability. Turns out he never hit his ceiling when it came to being a DB or WR but that didn't matter because he was the greatest return man to ever play in the NFL.
Hypothetically if qbs go 1-4, what does a trade from 9 to 5 look like. Any way it doesn’t include a future 1?
I think a more pressing question would be who is there at 5 and what have they done to separate themselves from the guys sitting 6-9 to warrant giving up the assets it’s going to take to move up?
right, as would Nabers, Odunze, Alt, Verse, Turner etc I'm curious what any of them have done to separate themselves as the first non-QB off the board, let alone be worth giving up a future 1st when compared to who will be available 4 picks later?
the difference between the 5th and 9th pick is ~ 350 points which is equivalent to the 55th overall pick
