we are going on vacation next month. want to pack everything in carry on bags so we don't have to fuck with checking luggage and waiting on it. my youngest 2 kids are 5 & 6 and use booster seats (see attached). i've read online that you can gate check them and still be allowed a carry on. but i emailed american airlines and they said i had to regular check them. anyone else have experience with this that can clarify?

just as difficult as from 1-2 imo but glad i have 3 #yolo

My daughter is here! I have her for the next two weeks. Parent and brother are visiting too.

I'm taking her on a British kid movie tour. Gunna see places from Mary Poppins and Peter Pan, maybe Brave if we get up to Scotland.

Tip from experience: had a nice play set installed in the backyard for daughters 2 birthday a couple weeks back, I edged the surrounding area with a nice border (Eco border, lowes), layed down ~40 bags natural cedar mulch (repels insects), on top of existing grass(supposed to suppress the greenery with enough volume), looked phenomenal for a very short time, now grass is raising its ugly head after every thunderstorm is washing the mulch all over. I'm back at square one. Long story short, if you take on this endeavor, make sure you know exactly where your yards natural water flow and runoff travels beforehand. Not a huge deal but I ain't got no time for this.

We've gate checked car seats on Virgin and United. I think anything you carry down there they'll let you gate check.

Have to travel for work (coaching) and the oldest is finally old enough to have conversations via face time that are coherent. Like "how was your day" and he will tell me.

Said today: "dad, don't you have enough good players. Come home" and I almost died. Recruiting season is almost over.

Since moving to the crib full time, my dude has gone from waking up every 3 hours to sleeping from 9pm-5am, getting a bottle, and then sleeping until 8am. While I'm happy with his progress, I'd love to stop waking up at 5am every morning.

Edit: He's also started eating solids this week. That's been pretty fun.

Took the little guy to see his first movie in the theater. I was a little worried that he wouldn't be able to make it all the way through, but he was a champ. He kept saying "wow, that's a big TV!"

Stop giving him that 5am bottle. Just go in, give him a hug and put him back in the crib. He'll stop waking up at 5 am.

We are pretty much the same except we get an extra hour on each side. It works pretty well because I wake up at 6 for work, bring him in to the wife who feeds him (still nursing) and then he falls asleep in our bed while my wife showers and gets ready for work.

Our little guy is about 8.5 months old so he has been on solids for a while. We are on to giving him typical allergens and seeing if he has a reaction. Last weekend we gave him peanuts (Bamba) and he ate them for a snack each day with no reaction. This morning I gave him oatmeal that I made with almond milk. So far so good on that too.

Next week my wife is out of town all week for work so this will be an interesting week for me as a "single father."

My wife and I both work full time and we don't put him in daycare. We are essentially single parents. I get him 100% from Friday night to Monday night and she takes him the other times. It's a tremendous challenge for both of us, but we have an opportunity to double dip (two incomes, no childcare) and plan to take advantage until it breaks down.

It's pretty amazing how much I've learned about him and myself in the last three months. I am really #bLeSsEd to be able to be this involved and watch him grow/change/etc at such a young age. A lot of friends and neighbors think we are crazy and a lot of times I agree. But when he's asleep in my arms after a long day with just him and I, it starts getting dusty in the room.

So the in-home daycare lady that we take our boys to just let us know that August 24 will be her last day. The only place in town that has availability for a 4 year old and 12 month old is a center. Our daycare costs will be almost doubling to over $26k/year.

    Ouch.

Can't remember when we switched our 4 YO, but we still have our 19 month old rear-facing. The new standard is until they are 2 years old. It's a pain in the ass, but it's so much safer, so I can't really argue with it.

This. We switched the older one that's just under 4 at around 1 but the new standard is 2 so we'll do that with the younger one.

On the bright side, we don't have to worry about taking off time from work of finding alternative daycare at the center. With in-home, that was an issue whenever she would take vacation or take a holiday on President's Day or something stupid when we both had to work. It doesn't make up for the price increase, but it's a huge convenience factor.

Also, a few months ago the in-home lady made the cutoff for pickup to 5:00pm, substantially cutting down my training time. The center is open until 6:00 or 6:30 every day, which means I'll be able to have full training sessions again. Selfish, I know, but it's something.

The switch has really been all positive. Our center has a gym so even when weather's shitty the kids can run around and burn off energy. The time it's open is pretty similar, which is really nice for flexibility. There are a lot of eyes on the kids so you know there's checks on caregivers, just for peace of mind. They also have a preschool on premises so no travel concerns to/from preschool for the older one. I wasn't a big fan of the center idea but it's turned out great.

2 year old baby girl is 100% potty trained and will be getting her reward trip to the Magic Kingdom a week from today to see all the Disney princess.

The wife showed me the price for the "princess package" (meet princesses in the castle, hair/dress/nails/makeup/tiara/shimmer and glitter and of course autographs from everyone but Elsa and Anna) and I figured we easily would have been better off not promising a Disney trip and buying another 12 months of diapers.

MN is so expensive. Our infant is like $20,500 per year at our center. We looked at 7 centers and the range was $16k (church--cheaper because they don't pay rent) to over $29k. Good luck.

When my middle daughter was 3, we were in line for the Blues Clues ride at Kings Island when they shut the metal gate on us right as we were next in line. My daughter grabbed the gate and started shaking it, yelling "dammit, dammit" as loud as she could. I was the only guy in line with about 17 other moms staring lasers at me, right through my soul.

You should have a height/weight limit on your car seat. Ours (Britax B-Safe) is 32 in/30 lbs. When he hits that (likely 17-18 months old) we will probably put him in a forward facing because the rear facing takes up so much space.

Son has been mowing my lawn and the guy next doors all summer, in the last few weeks picked up another. Stocking up the $$$$. So he decides he wants to use his own $ and buy a guitar. He has an old acoustic but had his eye on a fender, last night we went to the guitar store. He had $400 to spend.

I was proud he saved and worked hard etc

I bought it for him, with amp etc.... ended up spending 800

The little one has gotten separation anxiety of sorts for bed time, used to be a great sleeper- put her down she'd play in her crib for a few minutes and right to bed... Now we have to stand in the room for her to fall asleep. Don't have to rub her back or give her any attention just be in there- right now I'm just sitting next to crib playing on my phone and as she falls asleep she looks up to make sure we're still there... Any tips on breaking this? Full crying it out again?

So I'm in the dog house tonight because I mentioned to the wife, 7 months pregnant with baby No. 3, that having 3 kids under 5 might suck for a while. Apparently since she's uncomfortable and self-conscious, I'm not allowed to feel any negative emotions.

So back at the beginning of the year, Half Knight's mom wants to get him a passport, I'm cool with it so I sign the papers, whatever.

Earlier in the summer she asks to have him the majority of one of my weeks so they can go on a vacation, she didn't tell me where. I eventually agreed because I figure he would have more fun and new experiences on a trip than just doing regular summer stuff with me.

Last night she emails me their itinerary for emergency purposes. She's taking him to Scotland. While I'm a little peeved she didn't tell me earlier, I'm excited for him and also jealous, as Ireland/Scotland is my #1 bucket list trip.

We are debating doing a nanny share at one of my co-workers house or doing a daycare center.

The center we are looking at is $1620 a month which sadly is the cheapest place in our neighborhood. The closest center to our place is $2100 a month for infants. F that.

So met the couple last night that might get a nanny for their place and we'd just split the cost with them. Is $15 an hour normal? I like the idea of more attention and knowing the couple but it has other things that make me nervous like what do we do if they go on vacation, get sick, etc. At least with the day care, there isn't that outside worry of being so dependent on another couple.

So basically its a cost vs stability issue that we need to figure out in the next couple weeks.

We have a sitter/nanny come for 8 hours a week at $18/hr. She is on the expensive side, but was loaded with referrals, degrees, experience, etc. Looking back, the cheaper options wouldn't have survived my kid anyways.
