Hanley, Josh, Nolasco all drawing interest 2 minutes ago by KenRosenthal The Miami Marlins are telling other clubs, “We are open for business.” And already, those clubs are calling Marlins officials, inquiring about trades for specific players. Among the Marlins drawing interest, according to major-league sources: Third baseman Hanley Ramirez, first baseman Carlos Lee, right-handed starters Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco and left-handed reliever Randy Choate. The Marlins’ position is clear: They intend to make baseball trades, not simply dump salaries. And the first of their moves came Monday, when they sent right-hander Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for a package headed by right-hander Jacob Turner. One source says the Marlins will “absolutely try and try hard” to move closer Heath Bell, but the team isn’t optimistic that such a move will happen. Bell, who has blown six saves and has a 6.05 ERA is in the first year of a three-year, $27 million free-agent contract. Like many of the Marlins' recent signees, his contract is back-loaded. He will earn $9 million in both 2013 and ’14. -Ken Rosenthal
looks like the fish are trying to hold onto a core of stanton, morrison, reyes, and boni I have absolutely no problem with this, although i wish they would just get rid of Buck for a bucket of baseballs
No doubt in my mind if we end up trading Hanley and/or JJ we will try to put Buck and/or Bell in either deal to get them to take their contracts. Just like we did Lowell with Beckett
if we trade JJ to texas I sure as hell hope we atleast ask for their stud SS prospect Jurickson Profar
In dealing Sanchez and evaluating Hanley's future, Marlins trying to fix a bad mix By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist July 23, 2012 10:59 pm ET 1 | Comment Rival execs indicate the Marlins are open to dealing Ramirez. (US Presswire) Biggest question for the Marlins in the aftermath of Monday's trade with the Tigers is this: Now open for business, will the Fish get serious about shaking things up by dealing Hanley Ramirez? Rival executives who have spoken with Marlins people believe they've never been more open to the idea. Halfway through a bitterly disappointing season, the Marlins aren't so much trying to blow things up (as they have in the past) as they are simply trying to change the ingredients. It's not that they think they're that far from winning so much as the Marlins simply do not like their team. They've decided that the mix is bad, the pieces don't fit, the personalities have not coalesced. In other words, they've come to terms with the obvious. Changing things up began in earnest for the Marlins on Monday in dealing starter Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Tigers for starter Jacob Turner, catcher Rob Brantly and lefty Brian Flynn. Clubs who have spoken with the Marlins think more moves will follow, sources tell CBSSports.com. There is a strong belief that the Marlins would like to deal Ramirez, who has not produced under first-year manager Ozzie Guillen the way they hoped he would. Ramirez right now is sidelined with an infection in his hand, compounding the unprofessional injury he sustained just before the All-Star break in slugging a dugout cooling fan. Ramirez apparently developed the infection when he did not take his medication. Guillen was very vocal in the aftermath of the injury regarding Ramirez's immaturity, saying, "Very stupid injury. Very immature. You're going to hurt yourself because you can't hit? Good hitters don't do that. Good hitters battle back and try to get better." One person familiar with the Marlins thinking says that he thinks the club will hang onto starter Josh Johnson now that it's traded Sanchez. Two things point toward the Marlins keeping Johnson: One, he's signed through next season (one reason the Marlins dealt Sanchez is because he is free-agent eligible this winter). Two, he left Monday night's 2-1 win over the Braves after six innings with a blister on his right middle finger, which surely will give inquiring clubs more pause when considering Johnson's sketchy physical history. Ramirez has two years and $31.5 million remaining after 2012 (during which he's earning $15 million). Lefty reliever Randy Choate, whose two-year deal is up following this season, is expected to be dealt.
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi #Angels, looking for a starter, had a scout watching #Marlins RHP Josh Johnson last night. Believed to be special assignment.@MLBONFOX
Very good that he pitched well not very good that he supposedly got some kind of cut on his pitching hand though
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi #BlueJays, #Yankees, #SFGiants, #Indians, #Dbacks, #STLCardsamong teams that had scouts at #Marlins game last night.
They wont even throw Profar in a deal for Greinke or Hamels, he is there young prize for sure. But from what Ive heard about Olt(they're stud third base prospect) he mashes and plays plus defense. Projected to be a 30 to 35 homer guy.
I duno...we gave up adrian fucking gonzalez for urbina....trade deadline deals you can never predict how desperate a team will get for a guy who could potentially put them over the hump
Short term that deal def worked out for us as we got Urbina and won the WS thanks in large part to him Long term we lost a superstar
Buster Olney@Buster_ESPN24 Jul Sources:Hanley trade being finalized, Jurickson Profar headed to Mia. Spoiler
Maybe this guy for JJ? Rangers prospect Mike Olt, a 23-year-old third baseman currently in Double-A, has had his name mentioned in trade rumors over the past 24 hours. ESPN's Buster Olney had him rumored in a potential trade for Arizona's Justin Upton, or a trade for Philadelphia's Cole Hamels. Here's the skinny on Olt: He's 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 210 pounds, and was drafted 49th overall by Texas in 2010. He was recently ranked No. 11 on Baseball America's Midseason Top 50 Prospects List, and can hit for power while also playing above-average defense. Here's what FanGraphs' Marc Hulet had to say about Olt back in January, when he ranked the Rangers' top-15 prospects, with Olt coming at No. 9: Olt was one of a handful of interesting Rangers prospects that saw their '11 seasons interrupted by injuries. ... After appearing in just 69 regular season games (where he posted an ISO rate of .238), the former U of Connecticut player posted a .415 ISO rate and slugged 13 home runs in 27 Arizona Fall League games. In the field, Olt plays an above-average third base and showcases a strong arm. With Adrian Beltre serving as a significant roadblock for the big league job at the hot corner, Olt could move to an outfield corner or possibly first base (where his arm would go to waste). Because of his success in the AFL, he will likely move up to double-A to begin 2012.Olt did indeed start the 2012 season in Double-A, and, currently, his .977 OPS and 22 home runs are tops in the Texas League. In Hulet's mid-June prospect stock watch, he wrote that Olt is "ready to explode," and ready for Triple-A, despite his high strikeout rate (24.5%). Olt's got a future in Major League Baseball, with the Rangers or another club. He's projected to be a power-hitting, three-outcome slugger, who should hit 25 home runs a year. A plus defender, he'll lose some of his sheen as a prospect if he's forced to move to first base. If the Rangers want to add Justin Upton or Cole Hamels, while holding on to their top prospect, shortstop Jurickson Profar, Olt will have to go.
yeah i want that then trade hanley down the line a future infield of LoMo, 2B, Reyes, Olt wouldn't be awful
Reading about this one dude bundy from the O's, oh my would take a big package though for us to get him
Marlins sale expected to be vast; may discuss anyone except Stanton, Reyes By Jon Heyman | Baseball Insider July 24, 2012 3:36 pm ET The Marlins are not going to stop with one blockbuster, according to rival executives who've been in touch with them -- though one competing GM said he believed they may draw the line at Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Reyes. That would still leave star right-hander Josh Johnson as a pitcher of interest on the trade market, and possibly even Mark Buehrle. Johnson threw brilliant one-hit baseball before leaving because of a blister issue Monday night -- and would draw considerable interest. Marlins GM Larry Beinfest suggested they believe they need to change things around following the trade of Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Tigers for three prospects, including right-hander Jacob Turner and catcher Rob Brantly. And moving Sanchez and Infante may only be the start. The Marlins spent nearly $200 million this winter remaking their team, with the deals for Reyes ($106 million), Buehrle ($58 million) and Heath Bell ($27 million). Scott Miller of CBSSports.com reported Monday that Hanley Ramirez is being talked about, and that is certainly the case. Sources suggested to Miller the Marlins may hold onto Johnson, though it's clear they are in sell mode and teams are scouting Johnson. They'd be willing to talk about Bell (that may be a tough sell), Randy Choate, Carlos Lee and other veterans, perhaps even Buehrle, though one rival GM said he believed they'd have to be "overwhelmed" to trade Buehrle. But Stanton, who has monster power potential, and Reyes, who just signed for $106 million over six years, seem the most likely to stay.
Luis E. Rangel @luirangel Marlins have a scout today at Ballpark in Arlington. Martin Pérez will be pitching for the Rangers (vía @efrainruizp)
the return was shit because the dodgers agreed to pay his salary that was huge because we couldn't find anyone that wanted to take on his full salary without the marlins paying a good chunk of it so basically what the dodgers gave us in that trade was them paying the salary, didn't matter what we got back for him
Understandable. It's still frustrating that the most valuable young player in baseball 2 years ago is now worthless
best front office eveerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and lo and behold...the fans will get blamed nationally for not supporting a terribly performing unlikeable group thats a solid 30 minutes away from people with the money to do so.
Josh Friedman @Friedo790 Not one of the #Marlins first round picks selected during the Beinfest/Hill regime is on the 25 man roster. Remarkable and unacceptable.
man Beinfest and Hill can make great scouting jobs of players in other teams organizations but they can't draft for shit
Olt's a beast, he would definitely work as the centerpiece in a JJ deal. but are you guys really going to blow this thing up?
That's not what your brethren are saying in the MLB thread. Trading some free agents-to-be and clearing Ramirez's salary doesn't qualify as a blow up to me. Trading Johnson would.
I think they are trying to trade every under performing contract on the roster. JJ is definitely one of them
Not sure you guys were that far off, especially if all that money coming off the books was spent wisely this offeason. But I'll take it.
god the hanley trade set my day in a tailspin i ended up going to work without a document i need to finish an assignment, no headphones to listen to music, and no belt.
id be surprised if it didnt happen. we are only selling off poor performing pieces but keeping some others like Buehrle or Reyes. i absolutely believe this is to set up another go at it this offseason. they need to fill that new stadium, fast.
hey guys...remember when we had to build the ultimate Hispanic All-Star team with Hanley as the anchor in order to open this new stadium?
ehhh I wouldn't be so sure first off, this years FAs suck compared to last..Grienke will obviously be at the top considering Hamels just got a new deal, but not much else) and secondly I don't see why anyone would want to sign here at this point knowing that if the season goes downhill they'll get traded
