I won’t pretend to know what kids these days like, but I haven’t seen any of the other contending schools showing his this much love or whatever post visit. Being the center of attention, for better or worse, is more important than ever in the current landscape. And this seemingly keeps it on him from our perspective.
You would think that by now in the year of our lord 2024, all of us grown men on a message board wouldn’t get so worked up over a twitter post regarding a recruit. Spoiler I reserve the right to shit all over Preston Murphy should he not land Cliff
Football-Elite Basketball-Elite Baseball-might be hosting a regional. Need to take at least 1 from State on the road this weekend Gat damn Greg Bryne
I heard him tell that at my godfathers 50th birthday in spring of 2010. First time I’ve seen or heard it since
Sources have also confirmed to BOL former Penn State S King Mack will visit Alabama this weekend. He’s got potential
One of the things that makes this transition from CNS to CDB feel so drastic is that they are complete opposites personality wise. During interviews and media appearances Saban was intense, hard nosed, and old school. CDB consistently mentions the teams’s energy and morale, is upbeat, and isn't intense at all. Saban is from West Virginia but with his old school mannerisms can easily fit in in the south. CDB is clearly not from the south.
Another thing that I'm sure is going through yalls minds as well when you watch a CDB interview or media appearance is : does this guy actually know what he's doing and is he actually going to win here? With CNS you knew he knew what he was doing, you trusted him implicitly. With CDB, at the P5 level, you have the Washington years and that's it. I'm a big fan of the hire and I still feel this way. So still , at a minimum, in the back of your mind you question everything. It's going to be a wild ride. We have no clue what we're going to get. Maybe that's part of the excitement.
the differences are quite interesting. i tend to think deboer does know what he's doing and winning at any level proves one is capable of winning at another assuming you don't do some shit like napier did bringing in nothing but low level g5 assistants, which deboer didn't do. i also tend to strongly prefer deboer's approach to saban's. i'm not interested in being verbally abused at practice everyday, frankly it's why i stopped playing sports in hs (fuck johnny wright). if you can only teach through screaming you should reassess if you should be teaching at all.
I meant to bring this part up so thanks for hitting on it. It would be apropos if as we transition into this new world of NIL, portal, etc that we also transition to a coach that is more in tune with the millennial athlete. What if the very things that drove CNS out of football are things CDB can embrace and excel with? I think his personality is much more in sync with the modern athlete and it could actually be an advantage. Also he's much less likely to be completely miserable due to the current environment.
i think you're probably right. whether deboer is the right coach is yet to be seen but i do think he has the personality and approach you want from a coach in this era.
There has been a lot of talk about the secondary recently. The truth is that many times in the Saban era the secondary sucked and got torched. Especially 2013 forward as offenses got more innovative and the game/rules increasingly favored offenses. Sometimes it was because the DC sucked (looking at you Pete). Sometimes it was because the defense was overly complex. And for the love of god the DBs would never turn around and make a play on the ball. But it's not like we're transitioning from iron curtain secondaries every single year. Saban was a DB guru but that didn't always result in an elite secondary.
Definitely agree about CKD’s attitude, but really hope that this rape stuff in Washington isn’t as bad as it seems, that worried me more than anything else I think things like having a GM puts him ahead of the curve
Just saw the softball score from last night, and not something I follow that closely, so I looked at the conference standings. Wow, does Murphy survive?
The only way Murphy leaves is if Byrne pressures him to specifically do something coaching staff wise and he says no, IMHO (ala Shula post-2006). And he just made his big "hitting coach" change last year (by bringing in a lackey). I think the only way things really start getting ugly is if they don't even host a regional for back to back years. He's bizarro Nick Saban if Nick Saban had refused to adapt and bring in Lane Kiffin. Fouts patched over things for 3 years by allowing them to remain competitive on a national level, but once she left and the pitching was just "good" all the cracks opened way up. The reputation of the program - specifically for non-pitchers - in the elite travel ball circles is near rock bottom right now. Between the total lack of development and the transfers the last 4-5 years that magically went elsewhere and elevated themselves to match their high school recruiting ranking.........it's not going unnoticed.
