This morning before school, on the day before break, a parent walked in and beat up a teacher in her room while the gramma ran interference in the office. Broke her nose in a few places and caused a concussion. Then walked right out.
I am not sure. Also interesting that our local media defines it as an altercation when it is clearly an assault.
Had a bomb threat called into our school today. Had to keep 4th period locked down in my class for 3 hours.
The primary school in my district was closed for a day and a half due to “gastrointestinal outbreak”. It made the news and everything. I’m assuming that a whole bunch of recently potty-trained three, four, and five year olds were shooting and piling everywhere. (Autocorrect) Makes me glad I teach high school.
I’ve decided that I’m done after this year. Having a hard time finding another profession to start in without taking a pay cut though.
Apathy has set in with me. The grind just wears on you. Both of my team members for U.S. History are leaving this year (one a new school and another a new job). It sucks because we’ve really jelled these last 3 years together.
The mother was unhappy that there would be a team change for her daughter; a daughter who was failing all her classes.
You're trying to tell that the lady who beat up a teacher on campus has a daughter who's failing all of her classes!?!?!? Shocking.
Just noticed this teaching thread. Posted this in random thoughts but though you guys might enjoy this here too, if you havent seen it My friends brother is an assistant principal at a HS. #13280
If I hadn’t gotten the job change mentioned earlier, I’d probably be heading towards that point. This new gig is in the community where I live and the school has a good reputation, so I’m excited for the first time in a while.
- School went on lockdown today because of an incident on one of the roads that pass by school. Police presence and everything. - They tracked 6 individuals to house with two stolen cars and multiple stolen guns. - Two of the individuals arrested are students of mine who were skipping school.
Teacher faces termination after calling in sick for 2 days to attend a concert in Nashville, district says https://www.fox5vegas.com/2024/04/0...cert-nashville-district-says/?outputType=apps
Really? That was my initial reaction was someone had to rat on her. Washburn is a teacher but also a member of a nearby district school board to make more money bc teachers don’t get paid enough and need days off sometimes too. Washburn makes extra cash Brags about it Coworkers probably don’t like Washburn and her ego Washburn tells everyone she’s going on cool trip to Nashville and taking sick leave to get lit on Broadway. Coworkers say enough of this… File grievance
generally gonna side with the educator but i need to know what concert she attended before making a final judgement.
we have a hard time finding (and keeping) substitutes so usually if you’re out your students are sprinkled into other classes. it’s an awful setup- basically any absence places additional strain on your colleagues.
Officially done with education on May 21st. Moving on to a work from home job. Needless to say, I’m ready to be done.
100% Did you know there are emojis for facials, blowjobs, and jerking off (among other related things)? I do because an eleven year old was casually perusing them on their laptop in my classroom last year.
We got a new principal this year and I’m admin now and fought hard to have phones essentially banned from 8:30 to 3:30. Obviously kids still use them at times because kids find ways around rules. But this year has been so much better with a lot of discipline issues I think stemming from that. I wish we could do more to get them removed elsewhere to help with bullying and comments online but that’s not happening here.
Question for anyone that’s gone through this. So I’m done teaching at the end of this year, so I’ll still get paid for June-August. It says I can take my last pay in one lump sum or in 3 equal payments. Is there an advantage for taking either option? I also get paid for unused sick days and I’m not sure how that’s paid out.
Are you retiring? If so, congrats! I'm guessing one option loses less to taxes (kinda like when you win the lottery), but not sure. These are good questions for payroll in your HR department imo.
Check with payroll. I know I certainly didn't get paid for my unused sick days when I left the district 2 years ago.
IIRC in Tennessee it is by district if they payout on sick policy, $20 a day or something. Any unused hours for many just rolled in as service time for pension purposes.
If you don't mind me asking, what field are you moving into? (I've found myself entertaining leaving recently, but I'm 20+ years in so I'm not confident I could find anything that would meet my compensation needs as a new career.)
Insurance underwriting. And yea it would be tough to find an entry level job that would match what you’re making now. I’m having to take a slight pay cut since I have no experience in insurance.
Little more complicated than that (age + years of service). Most folks I work with end up around 30 years because that’s when the pension percentage gets decent.
Recommend lump sum and dump the extra into a savings account (or maybe a 3-month CD) so you can get a few bucks in interest.
Which makes sense for a teacher to be a second career then. You could work for 10-20 years or so contributing to a 401k, switch careers, put in 20-30 years, wind up with a 401k (with a sizable chunk since it’s been compounding while you taught) plus a pension.
Just got done with my Baldwin Zoom. That dude fucking rules. Just spent 45 min just answering questions and giving advice about acting. So fucking amazing. Said his favorite actor to work with was Jack Lemon. Most intimidated was by Connery, and gave Julie Harris from Knots Landing credit for being the most instrumental in getting his career started.
