saw it a second time tonight... just mint. I haven't read the book, but Paul has what, like 5 fremen names?
I think just 2? Usul = tribe name, only used by Sietch Tabr. Paul M'aud Dib = fremen name for use by all fremen. Other stuff, like Lisan Al-Gaib and Mahdi and Kwisatz Haderach are more titles than names.
saw it today in imax. amazing. like many others have said, one of the best movie going experiences i've ever had. i didnt read the book, but the one plot point i didnt love: Spoiler josh brolin shows up and says "surprise, you have a whole bunch of atomic weapons in that mountain right there. enough to blow up the planet. nobody told you? every house has an atomic arsenal passed down from generation to generation, and yours are just over there."
It's a little more "natural" in the book, in the way that information is relayed to the reader. In the movie it felt like a "oh by the way there's also this" which would have been better if it had been teased, even in passing, in the first movie.
"Arrival" and "Kiss the Ring" get multiple plays from me per day. The score past Paul drinking the water of life gets appropriately sinister.
I've only read up through Messiah, but my understanding is after that it's basically un-filmable. So one more movie, probably.
correct. you could maybe do Children but GEoD is beyond film audiences. gholas, Fish Speakers, humanity being bred into perfection for thousands of years, a despotic, immortal, invincible Atreides, and the Scattering and all of that is just GEoD, you'd still have to do Heretics and Chapterhouse. I'm not sure you could properly explain the powercreep of the later books either. Paul is arguably the greatest fighter in history up to this point but he'd be so insignificant to someone like Miles Teg. the Fremen and Sarduakar are meaningless compared to Fish Speakers and Honored Matres. I think you could go right up until "my skin is not my own" and then end the films if you really pushed it (DV could probably find a way).
I mean, he's doing it, that's the third film. It's political intrigue and war, same as the first book/first two movies. gholas are about as crazy as Messiah gets and I think audiences will be fine with them in the way they're used in Messiah.
There's some p weird shit in Messiah... Spoiler Bijaz....and face dancers....and guild navigators...and newborn infants assassinating people
I feel fairly certain that ghola will appear which makes the Bene Tleilax likely to appear and thus your first two things but I don't know if he'll feel it necessary to including the Spacing Guild as well since he's seemingly going to wrap up Paul's story and call it a day. they were entirely absent from the second film and appear for like three seconds in the first film. why throw another major power into the mix in the third film (in addition to likely introducing the Bene Tleilax). the last thing 100% won't happen, we already saw that with how the Baron bit it. one of them should be easy enough to tell by casting.
I also wonder if he won't get partially through and go "this needs to be two movies". he's got so much stuff to compress and make sense to people who aren't readers to get Paul to the place he ends up at by the end of Messiah. trust DV entirely and I'm sure the product will be amazing but this isn't going to be easy.
such as? because it feels like after DV wrapped on 2, he started talking about making a third film and sitting down to write the script. Zimmer said he outright dropped the second book on Zimmer's desk as a way of "hey, get to work on this" and that story came out a fair bit ago. remember, this film got pushed back a lot strictly because of the strike, not because it wasn't ready. they wrapped on this thing in 2022.
I'd imagine the dump truck of cash they gave him probably changed his mind. I saw something similar where he talked about wanting to even let Chalamet age some because Messiah takes place twelve years later but I guess he talked himself out of that. incidentally, no official date yet but prominent theories are we'll have it on Max in a couple weeks (~45 days to streaming is typical for WB). can't wait to be able to pause and re-watch a lot of stuff. the Giedi Prime sequence alone I don't think I paid quite enough attention to because I was too focused on the cinematography.
I also wonder about the movie politics of Zendaya being arguably the biggest star attached to this property and Chani being so marginalized in Messiah.
Dune Messiah feels way more like a bridge than an endpoint. I have a hard time figuring how they could stop the movies there without diverting from the ending of the book.
I mean, you're right that it is a bridge (to another person's story) but it's also closure to Paul's story and that's how DV will treat it. imagine Messiah as a film from the perspective of someone when the book was initially released and not someone decades later who knows there's four more books. Spoiler yes, I know, but he'll still write it as an end to Paul's story
DV has said in the past that if he got the opportunity, he had a plan for Paul’s journey in 3 films. I trust him.
lol that got bounced quick. I watched the Paul/Feyd fight again (Paul making Mohiam shit herself is a personal favorite moment), closed tab and reopened this thread like 20 minutes later and it did a vanishing act. another act of free speech from Elon, obviously
