10/10. I see several lazy sundays in my future of watching Parts 1&2. Will definitely be seeing again in theater
Do not understand... Spoiler Why they compressed the time frame so much. I fully understand the need to lop or compress elements of a long, convoluted story for movie purposes. But the movie depicted Paul's transition from refugee in the desert, to accepted tribe member, to skilled fighter helping sabotage spice operations, to leader of a revolt threatening the Harkonnen hold on the planet to absolute godhead of the Fremen all to within the term of Jessica's pregnancy. In the book, that all took a few years (St. Alia is a toddler when they attack Arrakeen). The tight time frame seemed unnecessary and made less sense. I'm happy to hand-wave a bunch of desert fighters being able to immediately jump into the imperial and Harkonnen ships and take to the stars to wage war on the great houses in space. They also kind if dropped the Guild out of the equation in Paul's threat to the spice fields and the ability to wage interstellar war, although that was made clear in the movie 1 exposition. Don't get me wrong, 10/10 movie-going experience and superb adaptation. But the book devotee in me has questions.
Spoiler I had the same thought while watching. To me, it didn’t feel rushed but it felt off. But I was on such a high of enjoyment that I let it go. It reminded me of Peter Jackson not including Tom Bombadil and it kind of getting under my skin in the moment but it passed quickly.
Spoiler I think it was probably just easier to keep it a fetus instead of either trying to get a toddler to act or having a cgi toddler running around
Spoiler Imagine her killing Baron Harkonnen. It’s laughable and would have been a disastrous movie choice.
Spoiler my quibble was not so much the presence of the toddler as its indication of timeline. It strains credulity that this all occurred in 7-8 months.
Spoiler I could be misremembering, but it seemed like an "Oh Shit I can't believe he knew that word" moment. [/spolier]
Hoping the movie kills it bc I want Villanueve to continue to get huge budgets to make whatever he wants.
My 10 yo grandson just pointed out to me... Spoiler In Dune, Josh Brolin wants revenge on Dave Bautista for having slaughtered his family, whereas in Avengers, Dave Bautista wants revenge on Josh Brolin for having slaughtered HIS family.
saw it in true 70mm imax this morning. a definite experience and makes me wish i could go back and watch oppenheimer in this theater with that incredible sound. Spoiler - really liked it but i think i preferred the first one because i was a little more interested in the variety of worlds, the different houses, and the introduction to a lot of the technology there. i re-watched part one late last night before the movie today. - as others noted above in this thread, i was sort of taken aback by the pace of paul's training and ascension. i haven't read the books so i wasn't familiar with a 'god toddler' story. it just felt like so much happened very quickly. not a bad thing per se but noticeable. - why did zendaya's friend stay back and fight the bald forces (killed 9 with a single blade, per austin butler) instead of flee south? i thought i heard a line about her spying or something but idk - i'll have to watch it again to fully understand paul's motivations and decisions but the "let's attack the great families in space" thing felt strange to me. again, i don't really know the story but i thought the atreides were well-respected amongst the houses. - paul telling the old mother to silence was the most popular part of the movie to my filled theater. - stilgar was hilarious a few times.
Deep breath "Ahh the messiah does not claim to be the messiah...exactly as the messiah would be!" My favorite running gag in the movie.
Spoiler Hans Zimmer almost made me cry when Channi was walking alone at the end. Total classic of a movie. I feel like I need to watch it again right away. agree on the one minor quibble being no sister and them not using the timeline the sister establishes either. My immediate thought after the movie was explaining her to a non book audience would take too much time and potentially add a weird element that was a bridge too far for non book readers?
A legit messiah will never claim the messiah position, kind of like here and for mods. We all know who the true mods are i am not a mod
What’s the best seat in an IMAX theater? Looks to be middle rear based on what is already sold for Friday afternoon?
man, i want to see this again. reading reviews and listening to the big picture pod and i just want to re-live some scenes.
Assuming he’s currently still in your lap, tell your 10yo grandson it was Lee Pace that slightered Bautisa’s family
Non-book reader that just got back from the cinema. I enjoyed the experience and want more, but after rewatching part 1 yesterday and part 2 tonight, I feel like something is missing. I don't know what it is, but I feel like there's a ton of meat on the bone they've barely hinted at. - the other houses/planets - interstellar travel - backstory as to why House Atreides got merc'd (was a throwaway line in the movie) - Paul's visions Idk, it just seems like this has been presented as a story as rich as Game of Thrones, but in movie form which obviously doesn't do it justice.
the most annoying thing about the Denis budgetary narrative is that he’s actually extremely efficient. He has a finished script, the actors needed for it, the locations needed for it, the schedule ready, and he shoots it and edits it. The two Dunes average $175m. meanwhile Disney will give literally anyone a $200m budget to shoot god knows what and then spend an extra $100m in post trying to make a watchable movie out of the garbage heap with the worst CGI you’ve ever seen. But Denis is the “risky” one. From available info it seems like 2049 broke even, even including marketing spend. People talk about it like it was a bomb and the thing made $270m.
Considering this is the story that George Lucas ripped off this franchise can go a long way as long as Denis heads it
I remember wanting to see a lot of movies a second time in the theatre but it rarely ever happens. I will see this at least once more in IMAX, maybe one night this week but no later than next weekend. I can't wait to see what else I didn't pick up on in the first viewing.
Spoiler I absolutely loved the opening desert scenes where the Harkonnens float to the top of the rock formation. That was a sick shot.
