Hot take, it I just have never personally enjoyed one of his games. They’re just not for me, I appreciate their quality while simultaneously having no interest in them.
MGS is an all time series and Snake Eater is a top ten game I’ve ever played imo but I played 40 ish hours of Death Stranding it was just not for me. Beautiful graphics and world design though
MGS3 is one of my all time favorite games. I couldn't get into Death Stranding. Visuals look amazing and the second just looks insane.
Interesting how many people (myself included) think Snake Eater is the best MGS but critically it seems the most reviled. It was very different but I thought that was what made it work and made it brilliant.
I find game reviews seldom take their audience into account and it becomes more about pushing the reviewers opinions PC gamer and Kotaku do this all the time
Yeah most reviled by fans but critically like Aussie said, people loved it, subverting expectations and all that...
I remember not liking it as much at the time because of the Raiden shit, but I'm sure I would see the quality if I played it again... its the one I remember the least about as well.
Interesting about Snake Eater rating, I hear a lot of people talk bad about it nowadays so that is fucking with my memory apparently. 91 is well deserved, will always have that final boss fight near the top of my list
Psycho Mantis is the most unreal boss fight. You have to change the controller port. Snake Eater was really good
Yeah that shit was crazy back in the day, Kojima has always done some insane stuff, the dude is all he believes he is, his hype is a little too much sometimes but the man has delivered almost every time for almost 40 years, it is nearly unprecedented in gaming.
All you 3rd person action fans, keep your eyes on Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, comes out Tuesday, I just got done reviewing it for Seasoned Gaming and it's awesome... great story, fun combat, lots of shit to do in the open world, etc
Happy to see it's getting solid reviews, here's my take: https://seasonedgaming.com/2024/02/12/review-banishers-ghosts-of-new-eden-so-good-its-scary/
MGS2 was my intro into MGS so I’ve always held it really high. But I’m not a diehard. Just thought it was fun and a wild story
For most people it was a complete bait and switch. We all wanted to see more of Solid Snake and then we got a game with whiny ass Raiden.
My rankings of mgs 3 1 2/5 4 If it was purely on gameplay. 2 and 5 would easily be the best. But unfinished game in 5 and the story was too meta in 2. But two was groundbreaking in what it let you do. Shooting out lights birds slipping on poop.holding enemies hostage shooting out their radios. Hell you could do pullups and increase your grip strength. Wasn't even a game mechanic they taught you its just a random thing you could try and it worked. One thing you will have to give kojima is every time he releases a game it is drastically different from the one before it. In an era where Activision Bethesda ubisoft etc just copy paste for a decade on in it really shows you how special he is. Even if I don't like a game like death stranding i really respect the innovation.
I think what allows the punishing aspect of Helldivers 2 to not feel unfair is that every single aspect of the game is extremely well made. Other than server connection issues from this blowing up quicker than they expected, the actual online gameplay is damn near flawless. Not a frame drop in sight no matter how chaotic things get. Movement, shooting mechanics, music, explosions, voice acting, animation, and enemy ai/pathing are all A+. It's the first coop shooter in a very long time that's kept my attention even when I'm not playing. The gameplay loop is extremely satisfying, with stuff constantly popping up to do. If Sony is smart they will give Arrowhead a crack at the MAG, Killzone, and SOCOM franchises.
I also like that you can grind on easy missions building up your load outs before moving on to tough battles. And the missions are short
just got to the first major plot point and god damn I’m in. Minor spoiler in your review but it didn’t matter
Glad you're liking it! I mentioned to the editors that everything I put in my review as far as plot came from the pre-release stuff that was on the game's website but that they might want to put a spoiler warning anyway for the folks who wanted to go in blind, but they chose not to
There really isn’t a campaign, but you can do missions solo. All users are collectively trying to liberate planets. There are various missions of different difficulties. You choose which missions you want.
