Sorry for bombing this thread all of the time. I’m obsessed with watches of late. I have 2 friends that collect as well and are in a position where we try to buy 1 around Christmas each year when bonus hits. I’m having an existential crisis for no reason about what I buy to have a good “collection”. It’s a problem.
Some people find a monthly payment desirable so they can get things now instead of later. Spoiler although when I did the math on month vs outright for my last cellphone there was a $240 difference to paying monthly vs outright
Making monthly payments doesn’t mean you can’t afford it outright. I’ve seen zero percent for twelve months.
Team Tegg on this one. I don’t care the rate: if you’re financing a WATCH, you can’t afford it. Do with your money what you will
Your statements are somewhat incongruous. I don’t think this should be a thread for finger wagging unless someone is purchasing a large white G Shock Spoiler dblplay1212
Do you think really rich people only ultimately pay cash for a several hundred $k watch? Sotheby’s has a lending business. Watches aren’t financed drastically differently than art.
Do they make any “several hundred $k watch[es]”? Edit: I was admittedly way off on their pricing. Looks like they do make some in the $20k range. I was unfamiliar with their game.
Yeah, I don’t think anybody actually buys those… their entry stuff punches way above their weight class though
My point is that claiming “if you can’t pay cash, you can’t afford it” is some Dave Ramsey esque personal financial management and completely out of touch with how the wealthy PROPERLY manage their finances. It doesn’t matter if the watch is $4k or $200k, quality financial planning still applies.
I was responding to a post that was talking about not being able to afford it. “Some people find a monthly payment desirable so they can get things now instead of later.” We weren’t talking about Sotheby’s or liquidity access lines here. Nomos puts a hold on your credit card for the amount of the watch and then charges you monthly, incrementally reducing that hold. I would bet most who are doing that aren’t ultra wealthy folks trying to let their $20k work in the market. I had no idea this would be so controversial.
I think the thought process is they could pay cash but chose not to. Also the danger in financing “toys” over paying cash is the danger a bunch of athletes go through where they end up broke financing too much and the money tap turning off unexpectedly. I think the choice to finance something when the numbers are right is okay but it has to be accompanied by some discipline or the numbers will be right all too often then you are broke.
Looking into Tudor I think for my birthday. Kinda wish this had a white face maybe. Still pretty nice
I looked at the Tudor bb58 today but seems too small on my wrist. The GMT looked better. Also tried on polar Explorer II. Still love that watch.
Love the look of an Aqua Terra. Looked at this one in the Bahamas. Way out of my price range unfortunately
I was Christmas shopping and just walked into the local AD. Bonus season is coming. Gotta make an acquisition this coming year.
Everything is 42 or 40 (tiny wrist club). I really liked a green breitling that popped but the 44 looked big for me
I like the silver Aquaracer or Brietling I struggle with Tudor still, in particular the models like the bottom that is just a Pepsi Rolex look
those are some big ole pics going to try to track one of those down when i'm in japan in a few months. preowned market supposedly real easy to get crazy deals over there on GS. will look at the all black and the chrono models too in 44mm, dont like the pushers for the chrono though so likely no go there.
I think I’m between the breitling and white aquaracer. The titanium one looks great and I like the Tiffany blue second hand touch. What’s crazy is it’s super light to the point of you tried to sell it on the street someone might think it’s a plastic knockoff. But the titanium is just that light.
Yeah I tried on a titanium watch recently and its amazing how light they are But I think it needs to be done with a super heavy 42 / 43 mm because I had that same issue
I’m sure we’ll all make the Tudor/Rolex joke here because of the similar aesthetic to the Royal Oak, but these are beautiful and they have actual history in the sport watch genre. https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/s/f2pQYeWp3A
