There's much worse ways to kill 53 minutes than watching this Todd Snider doc. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Johnny cash built a live in suite in his mansion in Jamaica for Jerry Falwell to stay in. He would probably like Aldean’s song
I've never really given country music a chance, mostly because modern country feels like inauthentic random talent backed by a team of songwriters with lyrics that are just a little too on the nose. With that said, I want to try to find good examples of modern country to see if I'm missing out. Examples of country artists and/or country adjacent artists I already know I like: Sturgill Simpson (mostly A Sailor's Guide) Jerry Jeff Walker - Viva Terlingua Johnny Cash George Strait Early Wilco Early Ryan Adams What am I missing? I know the names of Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, and Chris Stapleton and plan to listen to all of those. What else?
Are you exclusively looking for new artists? If not I'd add John Prine and Townes Van Zandt to see just how good bare bones songwriting can be.
Ha I changed my name to this when I had Covid in early 2020. Now I just have nothing else to change it to
Ian Noe, Kelsey Waldon, John R. Miller, Plains, Nikki Lane, Charley Crockett, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Adeem The Artist.
I turned this into my own thought exercise and tried to divide them into eras. I obviously didn’t include everyone, but it’s a start. I didn’t include the Red Dirt folks because I feel like those are off-shoots of the Americana scene. I also just realized I have a total lack women on this list. SC can point you in the right direction, there. The Rolling Stones- Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers & Beggars Banquet specifically The Band- Music From Big Pink & Self-Titled Elton John- Tumbleweed Connection Grateful Dead- Workingman’s Dead & American Beauty John Prine- listen to all of them, but especially his self-titled through Bruised Orange Jerry Jeff Walker- Viva Terlingua & Great Gonzos are perfect places to start with him Townes Van Zandt Gram Parsons Guy Clark- Old No. 1 Ray Wylie Hubbard- Just listen to his most played tracks on Spotify James McMurtry- all of it Steve Earle- Guitar Town through Copperhead Road Todd Snider- East Nashville Skyline & Live-The Storyteller Whiskeytown- Strangers Almanac Ryan Adams- Heartbreaker Son Volt- Trace Drive-by Truckers- Gangstabilly through Brighter Than Creation’s Dark The Jayhawks- Hollywood Town Hall Jason Isbell- Southeastern through Weathervanes Ryan Bingham- Mescalito Colter Wall- I think his newest one is his best Tyler Childers- all of it Sturgill Simpson- all of it American Aquarium- Burn.Flicker.Die through Chicamicomico

TAKE MY HAAAAAND MARIE So many great lines in that song Cashing in on a 30 year crush You can’t be young and do that
Steve Prefontaine I don’t think anyone else has mentioned him yet but check out Chris Knight. Dude was 20 years too early. He’s still playing small bars and shit across the country. Incredible songwriter and singer.
McMurtry has already been mentioned but you could do a lot worse than spending a year exploring his, guy clark’s, and Willie Nelson’s entire catalogues.
They always have a banger of a lineup. They always have great collabs. People jumping from set to set and the Deer Tick after party
I’m going to do my damndest to go next year, if the lineup is half as good. Was I too high last night or did the muppets play with Margo Price and Childers?
Not sure if this fits the thread, but this song hits me in the right spots. Def wouldn't consider myself a fan of country music.
if nothing else all this untoward attention that Jason Aldean put on country music the last couple weeks seems to have turned some tmb posters into fans of Childers, Isbell and Turnpike!
One of my favorite song writers. I drove two hours the night before a final to see him play about ten years ago. Was probably less than a 100 people in the bar. He bummed a dip off us after the show and shot the shit for a few mins. Seemed pretty rough around the edges.
