Haven't seen this much positive reaction on twitter for an album in a long while. It's everyone........very cool
Isbell referencing a Steve Earle song about Townes Van Zandt in his song about Steve’s son who was named after Townes. Townesception.
So many powerful songs on this but I keep coming back to Volunteer “some nights I dream I’m in Colorado, workin a cannabis farm And some nights I dream that the ghost of my mama is holding me tight in her arms”
”The last one was nice but I ran away twice And they gave up on tracking me down” also really gets me
My buddy referred me to the podcast interview below and said “Isbell compared the middle part of Miles to “Night at the Opera”-era Queen and compared the solo to George Harrison.” I was thinking it sounded like Rush or Yes or some other prog rock but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Isbell portion starts about halfway through. Also has some KOTFM Scorsese discussion and some Sam Jones talk.
Obviously If We Were Vampires is a good song but damn if it’s not the old people pull out your phone and record anthem
Been playing this album a ton and can’t make the SoCal shows so going to SLC in 2 weeks. White Beretta is a pretty underrated song. King of Oklahoma gives me a similar but not on the same lever feeling with the same storytelling feel that Decoration Day has.
I found this in a local record store last week. It’s a little warped but it’s apparently the first pressing. Trying to figure out how to repair it. Other than southern rock opera, it’s my favorite dbt record.
Incredible read from a recent Pulitzer Prize winning author: https://www.npr.org/2023/06/21/1183194069/jason-isbell-weathervanes-profile
Lagrange was amazing last night. King of Oklahoma, as expected, is a monster live. All of the new songs sounded good, really.
Weathervanes totally rules. King of Oklahoma, Miles, and When We We Were Close are my favorite of the new releases. Cast Iron Filter stands out to me as the best song on the album. I thought Oklahoma sounds like a perfect DBT inspired song. Nobody could quite place you in the mind of a southern criminal down on their luck quite like Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, and that's what Jason did with that one. This particular line from Miles makes me cry every time thinking of my children. specifically my daughter: "there's miles between us but boy, you should've seen us, she was scared to let go of my hand A tiny carnival, she said, 'Daddy, is this just like Disneyland?'" can't wait to see it all live tomorrow night
Opening riff sounds bit Neil Young to me. But yea the album is awesome. I've got tix for Richmond in August & Raleigh in Oct.
Hearing Jason explain Cast Iron Skillet and White Beretta makes me enjoy them even more and I didn’t know that possible
Dates don’t line up with my schedule and same with Vegas. SLC has an easy Delta flight from my local airport.
So far itt Miles has been compared to: Neil Young Tom Petty Led Zeppelin Beatles Queen Manchester Orchestra And the Full House theme song! I love it
tried to get tickets for the show Amanda was opening for, but the site crashed and we couldn't.. ended up with the last show of the residency. Fucking pumped, haven't been able to see Isbell yet, my first show will be the Ryman. Can't wait for october
That first Friday night one. Didn’t even pay attention to openers just tried to score two seats to one of the shows.
Not that these other elements don't exist but if you've ever listened to a Neil Young song I can't imagine listening to this and not hearing that.
Buddy sent me this pic from last night’s show…we’re going tonight, excited. New guitarist is Will Johnson from Centro-matic.
