We’re on the waitlist for primrose here. Went and toured the place in December which was 4 months before my son was born. We got put on the waitlist. For august 2024. Fucking 20 months out. I could have a second kid by that time. Had to go find another one that could take him in December of this year once our maternity/paternity leave ran out.
Will be officially joining this thread in a few months. Wife and I will be having our first. Little girl. 20 week anatomy ultrasound today and all was good. Excited and also terrified. Have been and will be reading this entire thread for advice.
In the new games you can just hit pause and it has all their special moves listed as well as fatalities.
My 16yr old hit 6ft 3in tall this past week & is officially taller than his old man. He’s been pretty about it too.
Yeah, but what would you even do with it? Start new hobbies, go on vacation, or some other seemingly impossible thing? Took me a while to type this as I am in the middle of a game where my 2 year old tells me to stand up and sit down repeatedly
My wife and I could go on some fucking sweet vacations if we decided to not have kids or own a house.
I got it off Etsy. It’s still hard for the kids to understand how to do it. But he got the hang of it now.
Just a thing that annoys me is when people without kids say this as if they’ve discovered this fact. “Do you know how much we save by not having kids??!??”
The money is one thing, but I think more about the silly amount of free time as the weirder life impact. I could picture myself working remotely from a beach or mountain for months on end. Most likely I'd still just be cheap and do nothing, but it's hard to remember what I did on weekends and whatnot.
Levi’s 3rd birthday party was yesterday morning. Went great other than when we made him go inside. “Too many people” and when everyone started singing he hated it. My wife and SIL made and decorated the cake and they killed it.
It's still awkward as hell for me when people sing happy birthday or give me some sort of public accolade. I've gotten over fears of speaking to large groups and trying to lead, but I hate attention like that. Anyways happy birthday Levi!
Thank you. I am the same way. About the group-centered attention in addition to being in a large group of people so I know where he gets it from.
I'm ready to get out of daycare in 1 year. But I fear sports $$$ is going to be right behind that. I talked to a coworker recently about summer camps and sports leagues. Shit was stupid.
We never did daycare. My wife didn’t work for 4-5 years and then started picking up weekends once covid hit. Between summer camps and sports for both kids, I’d bet we end up at like $7500 for 2023. Add in all the memberships (gym/pool, zoo, aquarium, etc) and it’s probably closer to $12k.
True youth sports yeah, but when they get older it jumps big time. Lil mans last 12 months of baseball was $7500 before you factored in travel, room, board and gear. That was just summer and fall team dues and tourney fees.
i will hold the line against travel baseball as long as possible but damn it seems so easy to get wrapped up in all that shit if your kid is into it
I hope so. I really really don't want to get into travel sports, but seems like that's how they do it now-a-days. Doing 3 year old soccer next year. Got a long way for that tho.
My 8 yo turned the corner in late spring/early summer to actually being able to play. The competitive juices came along with it and the summer tournament season was fun…but also exactly what you’d expect. 90% of adults involved in youth sports are questionable at best.
yea I went over $30k (for 3 kids) three years in a row. finally got one in school, can't wait to be done with it. bring on the youth sports fees.
Yeah, one kid is >$20k here for daycare (in a center) for a year. My son plays 4 sports: Travel/club soccer: ~$1500 (includes hired coaches, ~$200-250 uniform kit every 2 years, etc with spring and fall season and we can add winter training which would probably be up $350 to do Futsal + technical training + team training or à la carte between them). Baseball is about $350 ($175 for spring season and $175 for fall season). Travel baseball (starts next yr) is $700 (includes $150 uniforms) and you can add $175 fall season as well. But he will have to choose between travel soccer & travel baseball because the schedules/commitment overlap. Football (fall + winter + spring) is probably $250. I’m not sure the cost when it gets to tackle. Basketball (winter, rec league) is less than $200 and travel (starts in 4th grade here) is $650-830 depending on the team. It would take a lot of camps, training, etc to get to $10k in sports.
Our travel soccer isn’t a huge time commitment at U9. On average we have 3 practices or games per week and 1 weekend tournament. Spring is a 10 game regular season spread from May 1-mid July. Other than the 1 tournament, all games were Tues or Thur). They started team practice the last week of March. They will take mid-July until mid-August off and then start practicing for a 6 game fall season schedule over 5 weeks starting the week after Labor Day. If your kid is good and competitive you probably want to do travel because once the good kids start doing club the talent level for rec drops and competitive kids get frustrated by the kids that don’t have as much interest.
My son played 3 years (pre-K - 1st grade) and I was so happy when he chose basketball instead. At the pre-K level our local program has them on the ice 3 days per week for an hour at a time. All 4 of his coaches played in college and one was USNDT and drafted. It was very intense for 4-5 year olds and by 2nd to 3rd grade summer some of the kids are playing 4-5 summer tournaments in Boston, Canada, Chicago, etc.
RIP I played hockey growing up. Would love to play with my kids, but do not want to have to pay for it.
6 year old is also very obsessed but he didn’t want to play until he felt comfortable skating. So this fall will probably do the intro program a lot of places have. It’s 8 weeks, once a week, like $225 and you keep all the equipment. It’s subsidized by USA Hockey I think.
NHL learn to play program is your friend. subsidized by the NHL. Get a full set of gear and 6 weeks of lessons for like $225. Can't beat it.
I'm pretty sad to be leaving our primrose. Just got a pic of them listening to the guy that comes in weekly to sing them songs with a puppet. Splash day is tomorrow. Although they do crush you with in-day extracurriculars. Little man pays extra for soccer, T-ball, karate, fun bus, etc.
Son is turning 1 in 2 weeks. He’s also starting 1year old pre k in August. Lot to digest in the coming weeks.
