Saw an article earlier that mentioned there wasn’t as much of a time crunch to get it done with no Cobb and no RCA studio.
I think King of Oklahoma and Cast Iron Skillet are in a tier of their own. Not a knock on the rest of the album.
Borrowing this from my buddy, but I agree that Vestavia Hills sounds like it’s written from Cooley’s point of view to a younger Jason.
Miles is one of my favs. I think it’s been mentioned in this thread already, but it does give off a Neil Young vibe at points. At the same time, I also hear Tom petty in it (Mary Jane’s Last Dance) along with some Beatle-esque stuff towards the end. Hell, the little guitar riff at around 2:50 sounds like the Full House theme song
I’m still cooking this theory but I feel like all of these songs are sequels to previous Isbell tracks, either spiritually or lyrically. “Death Wish” cover me up “King of Oklahoma” “Strawberry Woman” “Middle Of The Morning” “Save The World” “If You Insist” elephant “Cast Iron Skillet” outfit “When We Were Close” New South Wales “Volunteer” Songs in the shower “Vestavia Hills” super 8 “White Beretta” Live Oak “This Ain’t It” palmetto rose “Miles” letting you go
Catching up on the thread: One of my best friend scheduled his 50th bday on the same day as the LA show at the Greek which I bought presale tickets to. So instead I bought a flight to SLC the weekend before so if anybody is there let me know Listened to Weathervanes and that’s a heavy fucking album. When we were close is an awesome song. King of Oklahoma was my other favorite.
I think I’m through 6 listens. This is a great album. King of Oklahoma, Cast iron, when we were close, and Vestavia Hills really standing out.
I’d love to hang it up but I’m pretty jammed up in my Asheville apartment. When we get a house it’ll be front and center.
I saw Isbell and JTE as a double bill at The Sandbar in Vail Colorado in 2009. There were maybe 20 people there. The sound was absolute shit, Jason was ready to kill the guy running the sound board, fuming on stage. JTE spent most of the evening going back and forth to the van. CSB.
Yep, just on repeat. "And I act like I was sleepin til she walked back through the door" is perfect at the end
Second line is “Don’t drink and drive You’ll spill it” Morgan and his stupid ass fans would eat it that up in a way completely unintended
Listening for the first time. About halfway through. These are the ones that stand out so far Vestsvia Hills If you insist Volunteer
Album has been on repeat for me but my top 2 at this point are: When We Were Close King of Oklahoma My first listen through I was so anxious to get to Cast Iron Skillet because of the hype itt and it did nothing for me. I probably need to listen outside of the car with headphones and figure the lyrics better.
Jamie found a boyfriend With smiling eyes and dark skin And her daddy never spoke another word to her again The old man at the Quickstop Lying to the county cops And laughing like his soul was without sin How did he get so low? Seems like just a week ago She was sitting on your shoulders watching fireworks in the sky He treats her like a queen But you don't know 'cause you ain't seen It's hard to go through life without your daddy by your side Don't wash the cast iron skillet This town won't get no better, will it? She found love and it was simple as a weather vane But her own family tried to kill it
Strawberry Woman turning into one of my favorites. I like Middle of the Morning so much more now that I listen to it as part of the full album. Not much love for This Ain’t It, but its a fun little toe tapper. Death Wish still sucks.
Yeah, that seems like the part I'm missing. Hopefully tonight I'll finally get to listen with headphones.
I think it’s the drums and the pace of the song that I can’t get into. Great lyrics. I’d love to hear a slowed down acoustic version of it.
I usually keep a playlist for songs that are new and keep them in rotation, so the songs that grabbed me from Weathervanes that I've added to said playlist: Cast Iron Skillet Middle of the Morning King of Oklahoma Strawberry Woman This Ain't It Miles When We Were Close
I really liked Nashville sound, I'd have to listen to weathervanes a lot more to out it above that one. Probably 4th for me right now
This Ain’t It may not be the most profound song on the album, but god damn it goes hard. Will be amazing live
My youngest has worn this every day since the album came out. The Lagrange show can’t get here fast enough for him.
