That would be the biggest island in the chain I believe. So if that be the case, definitely nothing close to a private island. If youre gonna be having a music festival it makes sense to have it there. The cost of getting something like that set up on a remote private island would have to be enormous. Not that it matters if youre running a scam.
The "organizers" of this were in middle school when Ja Rule and Blink 182 were popular. It's all making sense now.
Organizers scammed a couple thousand dbags just to hang out in the bahamas with Em Rata Hailey Baldwin et al for a weekend. Well done. Guerilla Marketing from the Kony 2012 school.
That tweet is phrased in a way that leads you to believe this guy was scammed in some sort of ponzi scheme through which he was promised to discover future financial success. Dude was going to be broke after this whether it was a scheme or not. The only difference is he's going home having not seen ja rule.
Per Billboard Mag: Blink-182 is pulling out of the much-hyped Fyre Festival in Exumas, Bahamas, telling fans on Twitter that they were worried that festival organizers would not be able to provide the production needed for their performance. "Regrettably, and after much careful and difficult consideration, we want to let you know that we won't be performing at Fyre Fest in the Bahamas this weekend and next weekend," a tweet from the band's account reads. "We're not confident that we would have what we need to give you the quality of performances we always give fans."
This was absolutely a scam by somebody whether Ja was complicit or not I mean everything was fucked up from the food, to the tents, to the lineup, to the activities, to the security, to the fact that they invited twice as many people as could fit- and they still went through with it.
if they cant supply basic necessities they surely dont have big ass generators, power cables, rigging, speakers, and just about everything else
Performers are persnickety af about the conditions they want. Saw a band walk off a stage recently bc the club was using a smoke machine and the singer said it was bothering his voice
I know some sleazeball EDM guys in Eugene who opened up a EDM club and would sell drugs out of there (They also ran 'The Indigo' and then 'The District' close to UO campus). They would also promote EDM shows in the area and were known to rip people off, artists and patrons. However, they were fucking savy at hyping and marketing something though, they had a large social media following and large 'street team' which was mainly comprised of drug dealers. The summer of 2013 they had this bright idea to to do a music festival, 'Kaleidoscope Music Festival' outside Eugene. Headliners were Bassnectar, Nas and Empire of the Sun. The County government was looking to have a event space in a natural wilderness area (dumb idea) and saw this as a chance to invest over $1mil in infrastructure into a field to get water and power out there, they didnt know or care that the guys putting it on were fuckwads. So they use their marketing prowess to release their first announcement video and the shit caught on like wildfire, it was the talk of the summer "oh you going to Kaleidoscope?", everyone was into it. They promised VIP areas, guided hiking, yoga, yurts, all this shit and people were paying like $2k for weekend passes, camping and VIP. The event rolls around and it's a complete shit show (I didnt go FYI). There is like 17k people there and they have like 100 toilets. The VIP area is non existent, all they got was a few bottles of water and "free" shirt. They cant pay the stage crew so they walk off on friday. They cant pay the porta potty company to come suck out the shitters so they are overflowing and people are crapping in parking lot. There are no showers. People didnt have tents who ordered tents, they are sleeping on the ground or in their cars. They agreed with the county to stop playing at 11pm, they kept it going till 3am. They stiffed many of the lower tier artists including Afroman which prompted a huge backlash. People were fucking pissed afterwards including the County Gov't. The backlash from farmers around the area prompted the county to shutdown their new venue and they lost over $1million investment. The event organizers were pretty much blackballed from any event work and people shamed the shit outta them until they all moved away from Eugene. It was fucking great. Word of advice, never go to a first year festival as they are more often than not, terrible.
Afroman has disappointed dozens and dozens of southern frat parties over the years. It's kinda comforting to know he gets swindled on occasion too.
Hilarious they are crying about being "evacuated" when they are a couple hundred yards from several nice resorts.
If you paid for a hotel and flew to a different country (or city, even) and you showed up and the place didn't exist and you had no car, possibly no luggage would you be walking your ass down the road and paying for a resort room without raising some sort of shit with the people you paid?
No, I'd be pissed. "Evacuated" is typically used for people in life if death situations. Hurricanes, floods, etc. These people can walk to Sandals.
Does a scam have to start as a scam or can it start as a real business and then become a scam? The kid ruined his name, so he is done. Not for millions/billions to retire with. Fair to say he had good intentions, it all fell apart, and then he didn't have the balls to call it off. They still had a bunch of DJ's ready to go so this moron probably thought people would come and enjoy themselves.
dbl is poking fun at the usage of the term evacuation. these ppl are more than safe. evacuation insinuates they aren't.
The worst ones by far are the dudes who are not professional and just there for the scene. Here is a pic of one of the Eugene promoters, dude in the blue. He's probably 33. Dude looks like he's embalmed.
If gambling at Atlantis, buying fake Raybans, getting black out in Senor Frogs and finding some strange is doing the Bahamas wrong, I don't want to be right.
I'm not shitting you, Blink 182 is seen as like a Godfather of the Punk movement that's going on with kids that are 18-22. Here's one of the new bands that is really popular. My 22 year old stepbrother informed me of this and I started laughing my ass off. He talks about Blink 182 like they're Pink Floyd.
So are they in actual danger or are they just bored, without most amenities, and had some stuff stolen from them like any other music festival?
At least they are using real instruments and not just pushing play. Kids are always going to listen to shitty music.
http://www.newyorker.com/culture/jia-tolentino/the-fyre-festival-was-a-luxury-nightmare Interview with someone who was there
The problem is this is happening the same weekend as the regatta which is the biggest weekend of the year on the island and there aren't any/many hotel rooms left on the island so people are kinda fucked
