Would anyone be shocked to hear that Jaylon Smith does not love Brian Kelly?

There is a reason he doesn't come around much or really rep Notre Dame all that much

Look man, I think we all agree that Kelly my not be the guy. I think we all agree that no tears would have been shed had he been fired. I think we all agree he made major moves to save his ass.

You seem to take this personally though, you are making baseless claims from extremely circumstantial evidence. All to show a coach sucks. Actual evidence showing players tweeting about liking Kelly etc. exists. I just don't get it.

I'm certain you're a great guy, but at times you come off like a petty dude with a weird vendetta.

You just implied that Jaylon does not like Kelly because he's "not around much" He's also been through the draft process, and rehabbed a knee in that time to try and recover his career. I guess he should have come to ND for a hug to prove he likes Kelly?

You may be right, I know nothing of Jaylon other than the fact that he appears to be a great dude and football player. Just seems weird.

And I pray to nothing other than love, happiness, and, welfare for my family and friends deceased or not at the Grotto once a month.

I'm just kidding mostly. Jaylon does not like Kelly, that I know for certain. Not that it matters, but our football alumni don't show near as much affection for their University compared to Michigan and Ohio State.

I don't have a problem believing anyone hates Kelly. He's publicly shit on way too many players for me to believe he's any nicer behind closed doors. But if I was going to pick a guy to illustrate that point I'd pick Kyle Rudolph. I'm pretty confident Jaylon at least was on the sidelines for one or two games last year.

One of my best friends during my time at ND was a student manager on the football team and knew a lot of the players pretty well. FWIW he said Kelly was always very standoffish during practice and only really spent any time with the QBs - so I can see how some players would start to dislike Kelly just due to lack of attention (seems like he doesn't care). Seems like this year he has changed that and I think we will see player perspective about him change as well.

This weekend has steadily become an important one for Notre Dame recruiting with several prospects expected on campus in the coming days

The biggest visitors are a trio of 2018 offensive linemen Ohio's John Dirksen, Michigan's Ryan Hayesand Nicholas Petit-Frere of Florida. All three have offers from the Irish and all three would be welcomed additions to go along with 2018 commit Cole Mabry, who incidentally will also be on campus this weekend.

As we mentioned in this space last week, Dirksen and Hayes are two we'll be especially keeping an eye on and wouldn't be stunned if either or both decided Notre Dame is the spot for them as soon as this weekend.

We spoke with a source close to Dirksen this week for his thoughts on what this visit could mean.

"I think for him, it's just going to come down to his potential teammates," the source told us. "I think he's got a pretty good rapport already with (Irish offensive line coach Harry) Hiestand, but he needs to go up there and find out what the other guys are like to see if he could see himself spending a lot of time with those guys."

Like many Hiestand recruits, Dirksen isn't looking for glitz and glamour with the recruiting process.

"Offensive linemen in general know their role," the source said. "They know they're not going to get a ton of individual credit. That's just kind of their mindset.

"I think John would even be on the far end of the offensive linemen. It's just not his personality."

The source hadn't talked with Dirksen about a potential timeline for a decision to this point, but wouldn't rule out something happening in an instant.

"It's possible if he goes somewhere and really feels comfortable that he could pull the trigger, but I don't think he's in too big of a hurry at this point," we were told.

Having Mabry in town should help the Irish's efforts in building bonds between all of the offensive linemen. 2017 Notre Dame offensive line signee Dillan Gibbonsis in South Bend this weekend as well. Gibbons will be involved in some of the weekend's recruiting events and will certainly be ready to put in a good word for the Irish whenever he can.

As we heard yesterday, 2018 Iowa defensive end John Waggoner will be at Notre Dame today ahead of a stop at Ohio State tomorrow. He already has offers from schools like Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, Florida, Oregon and UCLA.

"His character honestly is off the charts," Dowling Catholic head coach Tom Wilson said. "He's a terrific kid, good student, somebody who is really starting to come into his own, obviously with all of the attention he's getting.

"As a player, we thought he was an excellent player, an excellent prospect coming up. Recruiting-wise, things are probably blowing up a little bit quicker than what we thought, but I could certainly see why. I think he's going to be an excellent prospect and I'm just glad we've got him for another year."

Wilson called Waggoner "a student of the game."

"I think his coachability is really the big thing for him," he said. "He's a technician. At 6-4, 6-5, 245, he's got a long frame. He's got a body that can put weight on, but yet he's going to stay very agile. He's a good, solid athlete who I think is a relentless player."

If Notre Dame decides to go after him, the Irish should have a very, very good shot as Waggoner acknowledged growing up a fan.

"I think Notre Dame has been his dream school for many years," Wilson said. "Whether it stays that way or not, who knows? But I think as a young man, that's the school he's always rooted for. I think there's some mutual interest there. They haven't offered yet, but I think there's probably some mutual interest and we'll see where it goes."

Wilson said this weekend's visits and future visits are just another step in the process.

"There's some schools that have shown interest that he's never been on campus before. Obviously, he's been to Notre Dame, but I think it's part of the relationship-building so he can get a feel for what may be best for him."

2018 Maryland defensive tackle Ja'mion Franklin will also be in town hoping to score an offer and if he does, the Irish figure to be a key player in his recruitment as well. Franklin's offer sheet already includes schools like Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest among others, so it's clear academics are important to him.

2018 Illinois defensive back Greg Newsome also confirmed his plans to get to South Bend this weekend. As with Franklin, academics are clearly important to Newsome, who counts Ivy League schools like Harvard, Princeton and Yale among his offers. He also has offers from schools like Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Purdue and Rutgers among others.

2019 Kentucky defensive lineman Jacob Lacey continues to show serious interest in the Irish and will be back at Notre Dame again this weekend. Lacey is a crucial 2019 target for the Irish and the more he gets to South Bend, the better.

On Sunday, around a dozen underclassman prospects from St. Louis' Trinity Catholic High School will make the trip down after participating in an event in Chicago. 2019 linebacker Shammond Cooper and 2019 athlete Isaiah Williams already have offers from the Irish and highlight the group, but this is also a chance for the Irish to start building a serious relationship with an important high school. Irish assistant and former St. Louis Ram Todd Lyght has already done a good job recruiting this school and it could be one Notre Dame recruits for years to come.

Also, several prospects from Georgia, including multiple underclassmen with major offers already, will be on campus this morning with top trainer Derrick Tatum.

FROM THE BUSHES: Florida's Kevin Austin continues to look like the Irish's best bet among their top-tier 2018 targets at wide receiver and plans to visit soon.

St. Louis' Kamryn Babb is another top receiver prospect for Notre Dame and it seems like the Irish are comfortably inside his top five. The hope is to get him back on campus soon, possibly for this summer's 7-on-7 camp.

As we've said since January when we had a chance to speak with Jahan Dotson in person, we don't believe Notre Dame will be a real player for the New Jersey standout. Notre Dame is certainly going to continue recruiting Los Angeles stud Jalen Hall, but he's a longshot at this point.

The Irish should get a chance to impressive Florida wideout Anthony Schwartz as he does intend to visit, but it could be tough to pluck him out of the South.

As we've said for weeks now, we feel better about Notre Dame's chances with Amon-ra St. Brown than we did a couple months ago and we believe the Irish will have a legit shot. It won't be easy though and USC could end up being the team to beat, but we're not sure his brother Osiris' presence at Stanford will help the Cardinal as much as others believe it could.

As for tight end, Notre Dame really likes Will Mallory, but with a father and two uncles who played for the Wolverines, Michigan is going to be really tough to beat. However, Notre Dame does have its own in with the Mallory family. Irish offensive line coach Harry Hiestand's time as an assistant at Illinois overlapped with Mallory's father's time as an assistant with the Illini. That connection will surely help the Irish, but it probably won't be enough to overcome the deep ties to the Wolverines.

Notre Dame loves Mustapha Muhammad, but this looks like a Texas-Texas A&M battle in the end. We talked about him recently, but got further confirmation that Florida tight end George Takacs' interest in the Irish is legit. New York's Jeremy Ruckert is also firmly on the board after a visit earlier this month.

We believe Notre Dame has a good shot at Maryland defensive lineman PJ Mustipher, who is current Irish center Sam Mustipher's little brother. The younger Mustipher is a good, tough kid, who could probably play offensive line too if he wanted to.

We also believe Notre Dame is in good shape with Ohio defensive lineman Tyreke Smith, who is very high on the board. At the moment, this is probably a battle between the Irish and Michigan, but Ohio State would be a factor if it decides to jump in the race and he happens to be in Columbus this weekend.

Texas defensive end Joseph Ossai comes from a strong Catholic family, so that'll help the Irish, but they do need to get him on campus. Our sources in Texas confirm a strong interest in Notre Dame on Ossai's part, but they see Texas A&M as the clear front-runner at this point.

Maryland's Thomas Booker is another defensive end at the top of the board and like his coach told us earlier this month, he's a kid who seems like the perfect fit for a school like Notre Dame.

Florida's Andrew Chatfield is another talented defensive end on the board and one who seems genuinely interested in visiting South Bend.

Notre Dame remains a true contender for Ohio linebacker Dallas Gant. North Carolina linebacker Dax Hollifield is another top target who has legitimate interest in the Irish, but it'll be important for both sides to find the best fit for him within Notre Dame's scheme.

ND TO CHECK OUT KIDS OUT WEST DURING SPRING BALL: Notre Dame certainly isn't close to finished when it comes to evaluating 2018 prospects. In fact, a pair of top California prospects have told us they're already expecting the Irish to come to their spring practices to evaluate them in the coming months.

Solomon Enis is a 2018 Arizona wide receiver with offers from both in-state powers along with USC, UCLA and Oregon among others. The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder is the son of former Penn State star Curtis Enis and does have an offer from the Nittany Lions as well. The Irish haven't offered yet, but Enis said it's a school he'd definitely be interested in and they've shown enough interest to keep his. An offer could come after Notre Dame checks him out in person. Academics will be a major factor in his decision and he would like to study Business in college. His father is hoping he follows his footsteps to Happy Valley, but Enis says the decision will be his and his alone.

Malone Mataele is a 2018 athlete from Santa Margarita Catholic in California. He already has offers from schools like Stanford, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State among others. He's been in contact with Notre Dame assistant Brian Polian, who let him know he'd be out for spring practice for a final evaluation. Mataele has already made multiple trips to South Bend with his B2G 7-on-7 in the past and Notre Dame is definitely a school that would have an impact on his recruitment with an offer.

BRIGGS WON'T WASTE OTHERS' TIME: Jowon Briggsshouldn't be measured by the size of his offer list, not now and not in the future, according to his head coach.

"Here's the thing about Jowon that makes him different," Walnut Hills High School head coach Brian Lainhart said of his 2019 Cincinnati defensive tackle. "Some kids want all of these offers, they want 100 offers. Who cares about 100 offers? You can only go to one school. Jowon has a list of offers and he'll probably be one of the most highly-coveted defensive tackles in the Class of 2019 if not the most coveted kid and he'll only have 15 offers.

"This is why I respect Jowon because he's got his list of schools he's generally interested in and everybody else, he's like, 'Coach, tell them to go recruit somebody else and not waste their team with me.' You don't hear that very often, especially in the day of social media and Twitter. That's what's so special about him. He doesn't want the attention drawn to him. He wants it for his teammates and Walnut Hills Football."

Notre Dame didn't get waved off when the Irish extended an offer last month.

"I think Notre Dame is like an Alabama or an Ohio State, where if they're interested in you, you have at least have to listen," Lainhart said. "I'm not saying you have to go there, but I think it's a school you at least have to listen to what they have to say. I think that's kind of what's caught his eye, so he's interested."

Briggs is interested enough in the Irish to be at next week's Sophomore Day. He also has plans to catch spring practices at Michigan and Michigan State in the very near future.

WATCH OUT FOR LIL BRO(S): You win some, you lose some. That's the case with a lot of things, including Notre Dame's recruitments of the younger brothers of current players on the roster.

The Irish have had success getting guys like Nick Martin, Jamir Jones and Julian Okwara to follow the footsteps of their older brothers to South Bend. They've also missed on guys in the past as well, including Osiris St. Brown last cycle.

The Irish are already after a couple younger brothers in 2018, including the youngest St. Brown brother, Amon-ra, and Sam Mustipher's younger brother, PJ, mentioned above.

There are a couple younger brothers in Class of 2019 as well.

Florida athlete Kenny McIntosh is the younger brother of Deon McIntosh, who is entering his second season as a running back/receiver with the Irish. The youngest McIntosh already has several major offers from schools like Florida, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State and Wisconsin. McIntosh hasn't made it to South Bend yet, but we're told he will get there soon.

"There were a couple times we tried to make that happen," a family source told ISD. "We will get up there this year for sure. We're going to make our runs and get up there. Hopefully we'll be up there for the spring game and get him up there to see it. Kenny is doing real well. We definitely will get up there."

Even with all of the offers he has and despite the fact he's never visited, we're told Notre Dame is in his current top five.

"It's based on what he's hearing from Deon, what Deon is telling him about it because he hasn't been there to see it for himself, but from the things he's been hearing from Deon, he's interested," we were told.

Still, Deon didn't follow his older brother, Richard, to Miami, so the family has already displayed a willingness to go out on their own.

Michael Love hasn't received that kind of attention yet, but the younger brother of Irish defensive back Julian Love could be on the verge of seeing a boost in his recruitment.

"He's had a couple of schools take a look at him," one source told us. "Northern (Illinois) took a look at him, Illinois took a look at him. He's playing 7-on-7 and doing very well. He's going to be one of those guys, depending on the offense this year, I think he's going to open eyes of a lot of people as a junior."

Love is likely to see time at receiver, running back, cornerback, kick returner and punt returner for the same Nazareth Academy squad his brother once led.

"He's fast," we were told. "He has great hands.

"He was on the field a lot. This year, he's grown three or four inches, he's a little faster."

The younger Love has been playing 7-on-7 with the Midwest Boom team that has become a force on the national stage.

"I think his recruiting is going to pick up big time once he gets on the field his junior year and has some success."

BETWEEN THE HASHES: As we heard earlier this week, 2019 Georgia tight end Ryland Goede was fired up to land his offer from the Irish. He wants to get to South Bend, but doesn't expect to get out for many visits until the fall because he'll be busy with baseball. The pitcher/catcher said he "absolutely" hopes to play both sports at the next level. "I've talked to a few of the schools that have offered me for football and they wouldn't mind me playing both sports. That's definitely a possibility for me going forward."

Not too long ago, 2018 Ohio linebacker Brian Asamoah was nearing the end of his recruitment. He had a top six and a decision date set. But the offers kept coming with Notre Dame, Boston College, Purdue and Michigan State all extending scholarships this month. Asamoah has now cancelled his planned announcement for April 21st and said he will have to "rework" his top six. There's no doubt Notre Dame is one school that played a significant role in Asamoah deciding against rushing things. Earlier this week, he told ISD he would definitely make another trip to South Bend before making his final decision.

The Notre Dame men's basketball season may be over, but recruiting never stops. One name to keep an eye on is elite 2019 New York forward Isaiah Stewart. The 6-foot-8, 240-pounder already has offers from schools like Georgetown, Florida, Syracuse, Wake Forest and Tennessee among others. He hasn't received an offer from Notre Dame yet, but his interest in the Irish is legit. He visited South Bend back in November and is hoping to receive an offer from the Irish in the future. If he does, he'll make his way back to Notre Dame and it's a school he says he'll definitely consider strongly.

We should be lighting up Grace again Monday. ND dominated Ohio State and won 12-7 (would have been bigger blowout if not for osu scoring 2 in 9 seconds at the end of the first half). Previous #1 Rutgers (lol) lost so we should be#1 next week.
