The problem is because he's already lied (and the story is so fucked up and confusing) there won't be a consensus among NFL teams what the truth is. But lets say for a second what he's saying now is 100% accurate, there are still a million questions his future employers will want answered before they draft him. I'm not saying he's falling to the 7th round or anything, but I'd very surprised if he's a first rounder.
I agree. My opinion somewhat changed from 100% stupid as a bag of rocks to somewhat stupid and somewhat gullible. It change when he stated on his trip back home he "Asked his dad if he could spend the night at a friends house". This was a 21 year old asking for permission to do something millions of 21 years do all the time. What it told me about him is that he is very naive. I thought he was just stupid. Now I think he is a person I don't understand who was tricked. I think most of us are so jaded we can understand how he was tricked.
What would give you pause if what he's said it 100 percent accurate? Genuine, religious kid gets duped into thinking he has a spiritual/emotional relationship with a dying girl (that happens to be attractive). They bond over her misfortunes. He's still physically the same player. The only thing I can take issue with is that, prior to this revelation, I thought Te'o could step into a defense and be a leader in his rookie season. Now I think he's got to spend a year or two earning the respect of his teammates.
I thought it was clear by now that he is pretty dumb. Not one development in this story has made me think anything different.
My wife is gullible as fuck (I once told her that she could cook and eat gortex as a last resort; I found out she believed me when one of her friends asked me if it was true). She's also had a 4.0 since elementary school and got a PhD from a very prestigious university. Being trusting/gullible is not lacking intelligence. It is lacking skepticism.
I think yall are overlooking the fact that the guy sucks at football, whether he's gay, gullible or a potato. I pity the team and fanbase that drafts him.
No he couldn't. He wouldn't even have been the best LB on Ohio State's team next season. Hell even last season for that matter.
lol at the belief that an NFL team would consider taking him in the first round on talent and think he's the best player available, but ultimately decide "We just can't because he got duped on the internet into a relationship with someone who didn't exist, and his story has some holes in it that we can't wrap our heads around."
Critical thinking is just as much a part of real life intelligence as accomplishments in school. NFL teams don't give two fucks if he can draft a narrative or solve an integral, however they do probably care if he can make well thought out decisions on a day to day basis.
Genuine trusting person he may be but he is a special kind of asshole to not go see his dying gf on her death bed because he Might miss a flight.
He plays a position that demands the respect of the rest of the defense. Knowing you have a gullible potato probably doesn't sound like an appealing choice to most teams. If he had incredible talent then his play on the field could cancel that out, and earn him that respect. He's not that type of player, though. Just falling on the pile at the end of a play will not be good enough to earn respect.
That seems like more of a question about his ability than anything, isn't it? That's not what I'm talking about. If the story basically ends up where it is now, this will have nothing to do with what happens to him on draft weekend. NFL teams draft guys with 2+ kids or who drive drunk in the first round every year, but people want to suggest THIS is just too much for an NFL team to overcome when considering him? Please.
I don't think it will have a massive impact, but it's definitely not going to help him. I think his ability is what drops him, though. So, I suppose I agree with you.
AHebrewToo was doing a great job ITT until he tried to rationalize Te'o's actions. Then it was just hard to watch. Like a car crashing in slow motion.
I am absolutely rooting for Te'o to go to Pittsburgh in the 1st round. Then I can enjoy watching both of them fail together.
Friday Afternoon Headlines OPIE AND ANTHONY - are offering $25,000 to any girl who can prove they had sex with Manti Te’o. Because even though he told Katie Couric yesterday that he was “far from gay”, being gay or a complete dumb fuck are the only possible explanations for the things he’s done. And that sweater. Anyone else way more excited for the Roniah interview than for the ones Teo did? I'm fascinated with what would make him do this. I'm assuming he's queer and this was the easiest way for him to have a relationship with a dude. His cousin being the voice makes me question that, though. Still want to hear how he pulled it off.
A gullible, trusting person with several lies and a million ridiculous inconsistencies and leaps in logic in his story.
The working assumption for our discussion was that Te'o's story is accurate. So the inconsistencies and leaps in logic are not relevant.
I can't envision any world in which his story ever makes real sense. Why didn't you visit your dying girlfriend, ever? "Oh, I had school."
So have we figured out who the fake girl was that answered Teo's phone and made Tino Tuiasunseri cry? Seems like an interesting mystery.
Hey man, ND academics are no joke. If it were any state school in the great lakes region, he probably could have spared the time.
Te'o is dumb (sorry AHebrewToo) but coached by PR people that understand how to spin a story and how Te'o should answer each question. His Couric interview was largely uninformative. The complete opposite is the case for Roniah which is why I'm very excited for interview. The guy is clearly emotionally unstable and will not be able to stay composed like Te'o. The combination of Dr. Phil should make it absolutely great tv.
