I legitimately don't know why Blackthorne just didn't slow his smaller ship down and get behind the big ship or move to the right side of it instead of trying to tokyo drift between a giant ship and fuckload of rocks, but it made for intense television.
I absolutely hated waiting for e3. But at the same time, the excitement for it to finally be time to watch was thrilling. Like 2018 all over again.
They kind of butchered the swimming scene that wraps up E3. One thing that Clavell did so well in the book is character development. The Japanese would do something utterly outrageous (from the eyes of a westerner), and you knew exactly what Blackthorn was thinking. The show does an OK job at this, about as well as this medium can, but that's the only thing I think is missing from the book. Spoiler: E3 Like when they were leaving Osaka, and almost got stopped, but that pregnant lady faked going into labor. In Blackthorn's eyes, that was outrageous, and an obvious ploy. In the show, the humor in that moment was kind of lost. Also, Mariko definitely jumped into the water naked in the book during the swimming scene.
Not spoilering since the episode has been out for days and weekly release threads don't need that hidden clutter. Are you saying in the book when they switched people in the travel boxes it was meant to be funny? The entire situation could have meant death for Toranaga so that'd be odd for it to be humorous in the book. The diversion in the show... was outrageous but it worked as a diversion.
Idk I’m into the show but I kinda feel like they’re missing the mark in a lot of the bigger moments. Just some scenes are set up to be incredible and they kinda fall flat.
Yes. Through Blackthorn's eyes, I found it kind of funny... Not like a comedy sketch, because like you said, it's a serious situation. Clavell just developed that character so well, that you literally know what he's thinking, and how he just seems constantly bewildered at the outlandish ploys of his hosts. Another example is when he was "saved" in episode 2, because Yabushige conveniently just happened to be in the woods to save him, and made it sound like it was pure coincidence.
We’re on the same page the “gift” was Mariko, right? Things are about to be crazy when this war starts
Thought we were getting a bit of a slower episode until the end there. Thoroughly enjoying this show.
I love Japanese historical dramas. Probably more for the outstanding architecture, clothing of the times and of course samurai. If you love this show, watch the three films about the legendary Miyamoto Musashi (and played by Toshiro Mifune) on Max: Samurai 1,2, and 3.
I had the impression that the gift was a professional concubine unknown to us. But most seem to think it was Mariko, so I’m probably mistaken.
The most minor setback occurs: Modern day - "well that stinks, oh well!" Feudal Japan - "I must commit seppuku!"
That conversation was ongoing for pages in the book, guess it got cut way down most likely due to epsiode run time issues but in the book Blackthorne is totally bewildered by Mariko's refusal to admit it was her to the point he starts to question himself and by the end of the day he thinks maybe it really was her maid.
Gaddam Ochiba said the council will now answer to me and Ishido damn near pissed his pants. Ochiba about to be a menace
She’s the mother of the heir. Idk if she was the wife in the show or a consort. But the power and influence she has is because she’s the heir’s mother
