The following fall, me and one of my best friends from Rice were in Columbus for the OSU game vs Vince Young and Texas and met Sylvester at the Bucknuts tailgate. He was a super nice guy and fairly certain we got a pic with him and I was wearing my AJ Hawk jersey that i bought from some dude in China via ebay since you couldn't buy #47 jerseys from OSU or any of the main Columbus/Ohio shops at the time. I guess the reason i bring this all up is because we went to this tailgate hoping to meet Duane Long in particular (seriously, even if a little to admit now and R.I.P., too, of course), as well as maybe the Bank and Nevada, too (can't quite remember re: those last two) and had no idea that Sylvester and any other current/former OSU players would be there. Yet, this is when the couple random Bucknuts staffers there told us that Duane never actually leaves his house and none of the main guys on staff (like the Dean, Steve H, etc.) were even there. Looking back, it would've been great to get a pic with The Dean ;)
It’s going to be interesting to watch how this recruiting class unfolds in Ohio. You have three highly rated Ohio guys without offers because of who they have/who they are in on at their position: CB Dawayne Galloway (#97 overall) DE Cedric Works (#225 overall) WR Quinton Simmons Jr (#262 overall) Then you have Bo Jackson (#66 overall and 4th RB in the country) who seems to be on the back burner compared to guys ranked below him.
If Alford misses on another top 100 in state rb because he stupidly chases national guys he needs to be fired.
Bo Jackson is the highest ranked realistic RB target, but they don’t seem to be pushing for him. Jordon Davidson is next, and while it appears Ohio State is in good shape, it’s hard to feel great about a Mater Dei kid. Marquise Davis follows him, who reportedly wants to be the only RB in the class. Byron Lewis is right behind Davis - but South Florida so, yeah. There’s some tough decisions that are going to have to be made, he can’t afford to miss in this class.
What were you doing there? FYI, that’s where I watched the first Gulf War breakout. Probably had 3000-4000 people standing room only between classes in the large cafeteria room when we started bombing.
I watched it with my then-one year old while my wife was at work. She’s now a soph at UC. Sylvester’s parents used to live in my wife’s parents’ neighborhood.
The Gulf War was a completely odd part of my intro to college. I lived in Park Hall on south campus, overlooking the South Oval. Some students organized a “peace” rally on the South Oval. About 10 times the number of people showed up to counter the peace protest, a riot broke out, and cops intervened to disperse everyone. Helicopters were everywhere. The entire country was in pure blood lust to bomb Iraq into hell. Then it was over, like immediately. I knew guys who were called up ROTC and reserves who were back in class by Spring Quarter.
Sounds like 2003 I was born during the first one. My best friend in elementary school was born on the day the invasion started. We realized this thanks to Conflict: Desert Storm the video game.
Is there a difference, they’re all the same there? They use Smith Hall as a model dorm room on college visits. It was shocking to me to think I lived in a room that small with another roommate.
My girlfriend at the time was a freshman in Smith Hall. Pretty sure we had just finished banging and I wanted some Chinese food. The game was on and I watched the end while I wanted for my Chinese food, which I paid with her Buck ID.
My brother lived in Smith. I lived in Morrison Tower. I loved being near Marketplace, Adriaticos and most importantly Catfish Biff's. It broke my heart when I heard they closed
South Campus was the best. I lived in Baker West for like a week but had a weirdo roommate and my friends lived in Morrison so I moved over to MoTown.
I lived on W 10th for the next three years after freshman year in Park Hall. That’s only a couple streets away for those unaware so I ate at Catfish hundreds if not thousands of times because it was so close. Split so many pizzas with my roommate and we’d always play fifa or 2k where the loser had to walk the 3 minutes to pick it up. I thankfully got one last time in after the Penn St game in 2009 before it closed. Adriaticos and Market Place were also go to’s but Catfish, 7/11 and the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut were the places I ate at the most.
Before Papa Joes burned down half the block, there were 19 bars between Chittenden and 10th Avenue, including a laundry mat that had a bar, Duds and Suds.
He just didn't really talk at all and only left the room to go to class. If he was going to change clothes, he would get into bed and go under the covers to change. Like I would be at my desk facing the other way and he still did it every time.
Brown would have to outplay Howard to such a significant degree that it was unquestionable who is better. I don't see it.
