We haven’t read the books or know anything. My wife noticed that the video on the hard drive showing the outside being normal had the same birds flying in a V formation as when Holston first walks out. Went back and watched episode 2 and she’s right. So that’s interesting.
I saw a similar theory on Reddit. I'm not sure why they'd go through the trouble of creating another visual filter inside the helmet though.
Caught up last night. This show is good Noticed this as well. I tried to go back and find when George and holston’s wife were on the hard drive but couldn’t find it - but they saw the same video also, right? also, I still haven’t figured out why no magnifying glasses. They have computers and a pretty advanced power system. Don’t they have small parts that would require them? So I don’t understand that part
Seems like one of those diehard “greater good” guys to me. Gonna depend on what the greater good ends up being once we find out what’s really going on. He’s not afraid to kill innocent people
Caught up, good episode was good. happy Juliette got reconciliation w. George lol at “destroying an air quality sensor behind two way glass”
What’s up with the characters being stunned to see a video? They’ve seen video, a lot. There’s literally a video showing the outside and they watch people go outside on it.
The only video technology the general public are aware of is the display in the cafeteria which (to them is common accepted knowledge passed down from generations) is what the external sensors outside the door is showing as a live feed of outside. Holston called them “sensors” out of habit despite the fact he learned about the cameras. They have no idea what a Camera is. Juliet even has to explain it to someone by showing it to her and saying it’s like the sensors outside they’re watching us with “these”. The fact they saw a video recording of one of their own must’ve blown their minds.
Question for those who pay attention to detail more than me with my pothead memory: when/if they showed what the cleaners we've seen go outside see in their suits, was it the exact video they showed in the file on the hard drive? for some reason that flying V seemed really familiar and would make me think that the outside isn't all green grass and high tides. And they just play the video in the suits helmet screen to make them wanna clean to try and show everyone
no. the flying v looks familiar because its the same file Holston's wife opened up. I'm like 99% sure George was with her when you saw the flying v of birds reflected in her glasses or whatever when she opened that file. That's why George told Juliette in the recording to start there. Also they have already mentioned briefly what the door George is looking for is too
That must have been where I was remembering that. Can you tell me when the door was mentioned so I can go look in the context of the show?
I'm fairly positive that flying v was what Holston saw as well. I had the same thoughts as you that it must mean they play that video in their helmet when they go out.
when Holston's wife cracked the password to the hard drive and they open it up, they start listing off file names and make some random comments and ask rhetorical questions to each other because they don't understand the context of what they're looking at. Some info gets shared during that...Kinda like in Rogue One when they're in the database looking for the death star plans, Jyn Erso lists off a file name that comes in to play during The Last Jedi and Mando(hyperspace tracking and dark saber ...iirc)
Saw the door part and it was super easy to miss and doesn't give any information as to where the door leads to besides "tunnel" in the little atari screen blueprint. Just watched Holston's cleaning and he definitely saw the same flying V as they show in the video from the file.
They’re having to manipulate the video of the outside and the video of what they see in the suits, right? Or did they just somehow get crossed when the power came back on and the screen fickered?
You are assuming what the people know based on what you know. They only know the inside of the silo and the things they experience with their senses since little information from the past is available or allowed. That is why it is so shocking for them to see a picture of a beach or the idea of what is a star is even entertained. I always just assumed they think the silo is above ground and that is just a window and not a video feed. We know ti is a video feed based on the flicker, but otherwise we have no info that would tell us that that is what it is. The reality is as TV show viewers (please don't spoil me) we have no knowledge of where the silo is relative to ground level.
I think there is a cafeteria on each floor that the feed shows on so I don’t believe they think it’s a window. Not sure if it’s every floor but there definitely isn't only one feed.
Definitely not sure but I don’t think it makes much since for there to only be one feed for all 100+ floors of the silo. Could definitely be off though.
Well, when taken with the surprise over a video being a possibility, I think we can safely assume they don’t see video, OR perhaps it is the recording and playback of video is what is so unusual. that said, we know there is video in the mirrors and that some people are aware they are being watched, so maybe the latter is what is true.
they know it’s not a window. They send people out to clean the lense with a small cloth. It would take a very long time to clean one window the size of the one on the floor we’ve seen, let alone all the others
And iirc, marnes (I think it was him) says something like “the sensor is dirty. Haven’t had to send anyone out in a long time to clean” (whoever he was talking to) - “that’s a good thing”
Yes, definitely leaning towards them not understanding that something can be recorded and replayed, and actually this would also support why they don’t understand that a video feed can be altered.
I think that’s it. They have no concept of a video recorder. To them it’s just a sensor on the outside that somehow transmits the image to the screen. They have to have some sort of transmission knowledge due to their computers. They just don’t know you could capture an image, save it, and then replay later as a video
I'd have to go back and rewatch all the cafeteria conversations about the stars IT guy for the feed answers. I'm pretty sure they have the same feed going to all the floors or that's what we've been led to believe so far. Just a question of whether that's a "live feed" or a ~24-hour recording they replay. Latter would mean they "add bodies" to the recording whenever they show a cleaner going out and dying. The stars conversations probably shed some light on whether it's a recording or a live feed.
I thought it was really good and answered all we need to know for now. The opening sequence was pretty intense. The ending was satisfying, but still a little confused why people clean the camera. My assumption is they think by doing it they are showing that it is actually nice outside, but that still doesn’t make total sense, since they would think the person before them did the same. also what exactly did they do at supply, replace crappy tape with good tape to keep the suit sealed?
I just subconsciously let out an "oh my god" at the end. There's at least tens of other silos, right? Also, it's unclear if Holston and his wife actually died, it looked like there may have been white specks near her but it's really hard to tell.
In my mind, the timing of their "death" and Bernard saying she wouldn't make it to the tree strengthens the theory that they're sprayed with poison in the airlock. It just seems like human reaction to the poison is going to have a lot less variance in effectiveness than human reaction to whatever could be deadly outside.
At this pace, they could easily make 6-8 seasons out of the 3 books. The 2nd book was my favorite. Season 2 should really hit the gas pedal, hope we don't have to wait too long for it. Book pacing in spoiler below. No actual spoilers other than how far into it the show is. Spoiler This was where the first book really picked up the pace and became a page turner. Jules going to clean was close to halfway through book 1. So maybe they'll do 2 seasons per book?
That’s what I’m thinking. No need to rush it. There’s plenty of material to go off of so no need to try and cram everything in. Let it play out and unfold like they’re doing, which imo is going very well. The show is a top tier series.
I say the spray kills them as well, and Walks heat tape saved Jules. “They’re good in Supply”. I think Holston and his wife are dead for that reason. You could see a city in the background when they panned out. Have not read the books at all, but hope it’s not just eventually a trope of the silos generating power/resources for a society they don’t know about.
Yeah, I saw some HD cropped/zoomed in shots and it looks like you can see their bodies on the hill. From those same shots they gathered that it was probably the Atlanta skyline and it's like very run down/destroyed.
Thought that was a very good first season. Holston and his wife are definitely dead imo. Poisoned by the gas at the exit and they didn’t have the good tape. Juliette pinned the badge on his dead body which is lying on the hill. Can’t wait to see what comes next
What’s the point in giving the people who go outside a fake image if they’re never able to come back in?
I could be way off, but I think something to do with that is what makes them clean the camera. Maybe they think it will help people see the same thing?
I think the point of cleaning the camera is to show everyone inside that you still can’t go outside, at least that’s why the leaders want them to do that.
Torn between being on team “cleansing gas = poison” and the outside air being unhealthy enough to kill you itself. Gonna have to wait and see on that once we learn more, but could easily see it being the gas just to make sure they die soon enough that everyone sees. assuming the mysterious Tunnel is a safe way to travel between silos. They key the mayor has = the override/control key for silo #18.
