Ironically Gillis refused repeatedly to cry about cancel culture even though Rogan was desperate for him to
It's funny to listen to lesser known comics talk about how much Rogan sucks on pods but then also how they would love to go on his show for their careers (WellRed types)
yeah it's a spectrum, that's the point. the degree of difficulty on the jokes becomes VERY high when said group is actively being attacked and parroted by the most powerful people in the country vs when all that stuff is way way under the radar. this is literally the tight rope comedians have walked for eternity (and a great Maron podcast with some comedian historians talked about)
love WMBD (seeing Sam Morril again in a few weeks in fact) and saw that Normand just got married in NOLA recently. I guess I didnt fully appreciate how popular or well liked he's become because the number of hilarious/famous people in attendance was through the roof
Yeah his argument has always been if you feel "cancelled" you should write better jokes and I think it's a good one.
The joke becomes a little more gray because of the light shed on him but Louis CK’s joke about pedophiles during his SNL monologue years ago is one of the greatest toeing of that line I’ve ever heard. He was masterful at that…right up until he stepped over the line(in comedy and personal life)…and I think that’s the thing with Chappelle. Once you cross that line, you stop getting the benefit of the doubt on any subject for a lot of people.
Also funny because a lot of the dudes who (used to) loudly worry the most about getting cancelled were people with some real shady sex shit in their past. It's almost like it's projection.
its basically the response to the Dice breed of comedy where being bigoted and hateful IS the joke, it's what Dave has repeatedly failed to avoid doing for a guy who has spent twenty years threading that needle it's gotta be frustrating seeing people fail at it and cry about it
Burr let whining and complaining consume his act. I tried to watch one of the more recent ones and didn't make it 5 mins
I’m not funny enough to craft the joke properly but something about Dave becoming so wildly popular in white america that he just became one is on the tip of my tongue.
but yeah Louis joking about being a sex pest while we know now WAS a sex pest makes the context of all that so fucking dark
It’s the comedians that need to go touch grass, cancel culture and wokeism is an entirely online phenomenon. I’ve had literally dozens of conversations about how “people are so sensitive now” or “you can’t say that anymore” but never once have I heard someone actually offended by a standup comedy bit irl. Maybe it worse in very niche hyper liberal spaces like theatre staff, but other than that
Comedians are all snowflakes seeking validation and like 2 negative comments in a twitter comment section sends them spinning. It's literally that simple.
I think that everyone in media is terminally online especially in the comedy space. I’ll agree though, no one irl that I ever meet (gay, straight, black white or otherwise) is ever offended
It's always some group of like 3000 super vocal weirdos on twitter that everyone is always reacting to
I've seen him live 4x and he's one of my favorite comedians. I made it 15 minutes before giving up on his latest
twitter broke celebs brains because normal people can make fun of them to their face. it's literally impacted all aspects of our culture. to become a famous person you have to be a weird narcissist, so no wonder they cry about someone thinking they suck
Carlin would be called a woke snowflake today for his style of comedy if you follow the logic of the Rogan-sphere
All this is to say Dave targeting trans and gay people in his act is not at all normal for comedians in 2022. At all. This isn't normal comedian whining. There are no other mainstream comedians who do that shit. It's fucked up and he deserves any shit he gets for it.
Yeah I loved him. First comedian I heard touch on toxic masculinity although he didn't call it that. But man he sucks now. He got lost in it
But what has become normal are his audience trying to normalize that type of comedy fucking disgusting
The exchange here about Jewish people being in more danger than black people in our country is exactly what Chappelle thinks he's fighting against.
people who used song lyrics in their AIM away message to signal to everyone they're having sex were big AC/DC and Zeppelin fans
the funniest aspect of getting into YMH and 2 Bears, etc is realizing Bert is probably the median voter and he has by far the kindest heart of any of the 3 hosts
The genuinely loving way he talks about his family is so relatable. I follow him on tiktok and would 100% watch a “we’re the kreishers” reality show
his instagram stories (where most his tiktoks come from) is probably the most consistently wholesome content I see on a daily basis
Did anyone watch the barbershop sketch? White guy could be most of us here. I wonder if Dave wrote this.
was more saying it might have broadly applied more on this board in like....2015 than it does now, or that it was a self report on yourself
More comedians who don’t complain about woke cancel culture Gary Gulman, PFT, Jimmy Pardo and Nikki Glaser
Re: Dave’s SNL monologue The jokes about Kanye’s antisemitism could have been funny delivered by a Jewish person. Coming from a friend of Kanye, they come across as him saying “you aren’t wrong, but it’s a stupid financial decision to say it out loud.” Maybe it’s unfair of me to break like that, but as mentioned previously comedy is all about context.
