Dave’s a legend and at his peak was as good or better than anyone. But like all comedians, they just can’t sustain that level.
I don’t know who Adam Feldman is, so I apologize if I lazily platformed an asshole. There are lots of people who have the same impression of the monologue:
Some of the monologue was funny but the lie he told about Adidas dropping Kanye immediately (they held out several days longer than others brands did with disassociating from Kanye) irked me. He said on stage that he is “Trans Exclusionary” but still tries to portray himself as champion of the oppressed. No Dave.
Yea I watched the monologue and two skits and everything seemed regurgitated or just flat out boring.
Having to appeal to peoples nostalgia with all The Chapelle’s Show characters making an appearance came across as desperate. I’m curious if that was Dave’s idea or the writing staff’s.
Well several of the writers supposedly boycotted so I'm sure it was a combination shitshow over there.
nah, i'm laughing at you once more being hypocritical about when you want to be an arbiter of morality on here. classic double-speaking beo. i have no idea who specifically adam feldman is or even what "slaveplay" was. based on what was posted about (and just based on what "slaveplay" connotes), you can tell he is probably a shitty person. ironically, you are doing exactly what this feldman guy did; telling the minority group who was offended that they shouldn't be.
Nah none of us should act like anyone knows anything about that play or a What a critic said or possibly said. Just by the name it seems like it's a complicated play that you even talk about. Lets just talk about Dave and his really bad skits
im not telling anyone what they can or can’t be offended by. I simply said I found the monologue funny. It wasn’t all funny but it had some funny parts in it.
Yeah, but as he’s said, the timeline where he pulls a Sudekis/Jost and gets to fuck Taylor Swift is pretty much dead. That sucks.
He doesn’t have a handsome face like Jost, come from an immaculate part of the country like Sudekis, or famously have a huge penis/dead 9-11 firefighter dad so he’s a playing with a handicap there.
He isn’t funny anymore because he’s stuck on hateful shit. He’ll be a regular on Fox News within the next two years.
there were some funny parts and some parts that were kinda cringe worthy. Watching the reaction from the band members was interesting. You could tell there was at least one who wasn’t happy he was there at all. One went in and out of laughing and being upset.
Some people can and some people can’t idk which is right. There are some artists I can’t separate the art from the artist and some I can. Do you feel the same about everyone who has a troubled history or is it just Chappel? IDK if you were but if you were, do you think being a big fan of his has made you feel “betrayed” and that’s why you hold more “anger” ? I put both words in quotes because idk what words to use and those are the best I could think of.
No I just think he sucks as a person and it severely limits my ability to not have that at the front of my mind whenever I see him.
I always think of how I feel about Chappelle in relation to how an older generation felt when they found out when Cosby was/is a POS. I don't know enough outside of the Cosby show but the thinking is that he was some upstanding dude(my impression was that he just played one on TV). The difference is that it's not always just been about comedy with Dave. His "truth-to-power" approach to comedy permeates even his funniest of bits and standup routines. That's what pisses me off so much about Dave. To be so ridiculously outspoken on the treatment of black people in this country for hundreds of years, only to 1)choose to use that feeling as an affront on another severely belittled community instead of identifying with them and 2) being unable to stay grounded in the face of money and power. It reminds me of the episode of Atlanta where the black kid identifies as white, gets a race change procedure, all while getting clowned by Paper Boi...only to turn out to be a bigot against the LGBT community because of what they identify as.
I was a huge Dave fan. Killing Them Softly is possibly the best standup special I've ever seen. He didn't have all this baggage attached to him when I watched it though so I wasn't having to sift through that as I watched it. I tried to watch the monologue posted in here but couldn't get through it.
IDK if I qualify as “the older generation “ but I’ll answer. I was just talking to my wife about Wakanda Forever because my daughter took my grandson to see the midnight showing. He loved it and was so happy to see a super hero that reminded him of himself. My point is representation matters and POC had very few examples of that on TV. That’s who Cosby was and why him being a pos hurts so much. He is one person who’s acts I can’t get past. That said comparing DC to a convicted rapist is 100% wrong imo. To me actions have always been greater than words. DC said some fucked up hurtful shit but it’s not close to the same as raping 60 women.
Yeah, comparing Chappelle to Cosby is ridiculous, even if it wasn't meant as a true apples-to-apples comp. There's levels to this, and "raping a bunch of women" is on a very different level than "telling bad and insensitive jokes about a group of people and then refusing to apologize for them".
It is also not a good comparison for separating the art from the artist, because Cosby wasn't raping on stage as part of his act, while Chappelle's transphobia specifically comes out in his art.
Watching the monologue I was basically jaw dropped, then belly laughing then jaw dropped again. I honestly can’t believe they aired that.
like I said check out the band members and this was exactly their reaction (except for my 2 one that didn’t laugh at all and one that laughed at almost everything).
Is this where we get into words having no power when coming from a guy hosting Saturday Night Live or that they aren't "real" victims.
this is were it gets weird for me. Because, I feel like saying “DC saying some fucked up shit isn’t worse than rape” makes it sound like I’m defending DC which I’m not.
