Spoiler Definitely noticed the smile while everyone was getting shot at, the number 001, turning on the lights when he starts crying, and them not showing you him dying but didn’t put it all together. I didn’t like the ending with his childhood buddy but guess it’s hard not to devolve into that.
Just finished the first episode. Said they could win 100 million won. That’s only a little over 86K American dollars. Depending on where you live in the US, it’s considerably more expensive to live in Seoul, South Korea. No wonder so many voted no.
You should watch closer if you thought they were only winning 100 million won. That was if they quit it would be paid to the deceased relatives.
I definitely got fooled by google autocomplete, I was very confused when I was seeing 46 million won equalling $39k.
I blew through Alice in Borderland yesterday also. It goes pretty quickly at 40 minutes per episode. It's much more complicated than Squid Game, but not to it's detriment. It reminds me of a cross between Ready player One and Squid Game. I definitely enjoy this genre a lot and had no idea that I did. It also doesn't hurt that Asian women can be super hot.
Spoiler Simply put: I didn't like the ending because the version of the old man from the game was one of the most attachable characters. Turning him into the villain is a cheap twist and ruins his death
Two more episodes to go. The English actors are absolutely horrible actors though. I have enjoyed it but nothing tops Battle Royale.
No, I have subtitles on. I’m not a philistine. Just talking about the rich folks with the masks that come in at the end.
Oh yeah, miserable, stilted. The way they talked felt like they were to trying to annunciate for a non-English speaking audience.
Spoiler I saw this on Reddit. But if you notice during the tug of war scene. 001 doesn’t have locks on his shackles like the rest of his team
This is how I feel as well. But as a whole I really really liked the show. Gganbu is one of the best things I’ve watched in a very long time.
I can say unspoilered here “I wasn’t happy about the ending” without essentially spoilering who won and their actions after the games conclude. Lebron did not apply the correct amount of discretion for a show that has bubbled up in popularity with many having finished but the vast majority either midway or “I should watch this, everyone’s talking about it.”
I’ll be honest, it was early am and I was up before the fiancée, I put the volume on my phone up one notch and put it to my ear and didn’t watch the video, I thought he was still talking on the mic at the press conference. I’ll recant my accusation of indiscretion.
It's not something that is easy to like because it is not what we want. I get that it is not a Disney outcome, and to that end I give it credit. He is a damaged person, so why should we expect a complete redemption arc at this point. Maybe it was cheap to even have him buy the ticket and plan to go and then back out, but that would be my biggest criticism. It definitely leaves things open in a better way for what could happen in a season two though.
I get that it was written to be open ended for maybe a second season, but that dude is an absolute terrible person/father. Not all terrible people redeem themselves.
Redemption talk. Didn’t really think there were links between squid game and Ted lasso but here we are
See I felt exactly opposite. The whole time in the game he was the one championing “righteousness, friendship, humanity, teamwork, goodness.” Then we see how he deals with depression/trauma/PTSD after. He makes good on his promises to his dead friends. Then complete flips on everything that the character has been building towards the entire series just to easily open up the chance at a season 2. It was shit.
He walked around a beaten man after he won. He was a beaten man before he won. The game was the only thing that gave him purpose. He never found purpose or footing in the real world.
Yeah, that’s completely ignoring the purpose behind his choices. Outside the ending of episode 6 he always chose the noble choice. And his actions were understandable there. The final scene 180’d the character progression they built all season.
The hardest choice for him has always been his family and responsibility in the real world. His daughter has a stable family and in his mind he may not feel that adrenaline that speaks to need for the noble choices he made in the game. She is not in danger. He didn't have to go back to the game in the first place and could have been a good dad then. Just because he did well in the game and was noble (most of the time) doesn't mean he has learned or ready to do what is right in the real world in a scenario that is a much bigger challenge for him then the game. I think everyone is forgetting that it took him a full year to even consider visiting her. Again, the point I agree about is why tease it to the point of being on the walk to the plane? I get it was for dramatic purpose and to hammer home the point, but I can see being upset that if he made it that far is the draw of what he saw at the airport strong enough to pull him back in. I would argue yes, but I get the frustration.
I wouldn’t say I liked it in terms of outcome for the story I wanted to happen, but it felt like the right ending to me so I think they did a solid job.
Spoiler such a great show. I didnt mind the ending. This is probably due to my fear of heights but the tug of war and glass stepping stones games gave me the most anxiety. I think glass stepping stones was the worst game there. Fuck that. I had a problem with something that happened in that game also. For as much as they wanted to have the game equal and fair to all players, as stated when the doctor was killed, i got really irritated at the front man turning off the lights on those final 4. Made no sense. He was adding an element to the game that the rest didnt have to face. I still get the willies thinking about jumping onto glass randomly and having a 50/50 chance at falling to ur death. [/spoliers]
Spoiler Im also almost too shamed to admit this but i had to go look at who the actor was playing the front man. His voice and face were very familiar but i couldnt place it. He was freakin Storm Shadow and Billy Rocks from the Magnificent 7.
Spoiler I think the point was the glass worker had an unfair advantage that the other players didn’t. Now you could say that for other games, like fat players had an advantage for tug of war or a multitude of other issues I’m sure. I don’t think there was actually any noble-ness to the “equal opportunity” aspect, I think it was just to keep the gamblers from complaining.
Spoiler I thought shooting the glass out and it shattering and dooming the last girl was just dumb, they completed the challenge, they didn’t say “cross the bridge and then haul ass away from the bridge so you’re not impaled.”
Just finished first episode. Super fucked up. Not sure I want to watch this whole season. Is there anything redeeming about it ? Seems mostly to be misery, violence, and death.
You won’t be surprised to hear more people will die. But there’s some good watching ahead of you should you decide to continue.
Have the last episode to go still not over the ending to ep 6 I honestly wanted about 3-4 of them to win
