I didn’t want to keep filling the board game thread with DnD show discussion so talk freely here. Be warned of spoilers before reading on if not caught up.
Tonight’s spoiler is the audio seems like it’s going to have trouble, and it’s gonna be a late night again instead of a normal bedtime due to ticketing issues
Only discovered Critical Role last spring. Watched the first campaign and am now on episode 14 of campaign 2. Hadn't played since I was a kid. Got the Starter Set for my son for his 9th birthday. His response was an awed "D&D, so sick!" lol
I DM for my 2 boys, 7 (dragonborn monk) and 11 (human wizard). Its a struggle at times but they enjoy it.
CR season 2 spoilers Spoiler I think the moment of the campaign was Molly dying. Felt like that added a lot of gravitas to the season. Also I thought Molly's character sucked and Caduceus is a lot better.
I agree on the last sentence. And before I give my thoughts on the first sentence, episode are you on?
My son is 9 (dragonborn barbarian) and daughter is 8 (elven bard). I downloaded an adventure off DMs Guild called "Down The Hole!" that I DM'd for them. I'm also playing a dwarven, forge cleric to help keep them alive lol About halfway thru that adventure a buddy of mine (elven ranger) and his high school freshman daughter (halfling druid) joined us. We've started The Lost Mines of Phandelver but aren't far into it. Basically got thru the opening bit and got to the city of Phandelin. Hard to find consistent time with work, school, kids activities and whatnot
I made a half orc barbarian to tank for them. Also gave them some magic items to keep them alive (the wizard has a cleric staff to provide healing). I'm trying to get my wife to join us to help them along the way but thus far she's resisted my charms.
Spoiler to me the biggest event is the returning of the bright sphere. Essentially getting in between a war that they are resolving. Fav. Moment is Jester beating the Hag with pastries and friendship.
ONE OF YALL SET SOMETHING UP ON ROLL-20! Spoiler I would do it, but I’ve never DM’d and would be too nervous
Jester's moment was legendary. Also I think the episode The Kings Cage was the best D&D episode of all time.
Spoiler molly sucked almost as bad as the blood hunter class does. Caduceus is such a massive improvement
Would like to see more of what the new content is in it, but both the college of eloquence and the oath of heroism were pretty bad when they came out on UA. College of eloquence is the "debate me!" bard
Theros? Like MtG Theros? Having googled, yes. It’s theros from Magic the Gathering. Basically a land of Gods. So maybe a next step from the Ravnica book they did a year or so ago.
Vox Machina got so much better once they dumped Orion. Despite his obvious cheating, Tiberius was super annoying and disruptive
Man, that whole situation in real time was very confusing. I think Orion envisioned everything that has happened, happening. But he wanted to push the rest of the cast to get there faster. That and his play style seemed to just grate the cast.
I’ve listened/watched the whole first campaign but started after he was gone, wtf was with that whole situation?
they never officially said why he was booted off of the show but there’s plenty of speculation out there if you google it
I agree with this in general. My first DnD love was Acquisitions Incorporated when Chris Perkins would DM for Scott Kurtz and the Penny Arcade guys. Then they moved it to all live shows and it was good at first but now the live events are just chaos with everyone just mugging for the crowd instead of reacting organically and playing the game which is why these are fun to watch and listen to in the first place.
Not sure I could articulate it better than that. We get it. The ship's name is the Balleater. Move on.
I hate live episodes, only Adventure Zone has tolerable live episodes. And i think that's because even the studio episodes of TAZ involve mugging for the potential crowd
Live episodes should be one-shots. That way you can be a little more relaxed and have fun with it. Search for Grog and Terry Darrington Brigade for cool live shows
Live shows kind of suck because of how restrained they are by the time limit. Sometimes you see DM's rushing through shit as they watch the clock count down.
Indeed, but I think that’s why it should be one-shots. Live shows are for the crowed, not the pod listeners
I have also never played, but got turned onto TAZ and have started going through that, and I'm intrigued.
Shit man, I'll just invite you if we get anything going in town. Surely my kids will get easier and i can leave the house at some point.
That'd be great. I'd rather get to learn it with some folks I know so that I don't feel like an idiot with experienced players i don't know.
Theoretically, if we did run something on Roll20, it would need to be like 9pm CST- 11pm CST or shorter chunks on a weeknight for it to work, at least for me. I don’t think I could ever commit to a 4 hour block, or at least rarely make it work. I’d rather do shorter sessions than a single long session. Idk how everyone else feels about it. hell, I would be willing to DM something if we could make the timings work.
I think MOST responding are in the central time zone. And for the most part those hours would work for me.
I’m on episode 79 of campaign 1, before the end of the campaign do they revisit the crystal skull they found in the house in Iman that contains the githraki?
Also, Marisha in the VM campaign....woof. I'm at the Thordak fight and she blew a 8th and 7th level spell to do 17 damage. She almost blew the Pit Fiend fight and almost got the party killed much earlier in the campaign by casting windwalk on them during a fight.
Has anyone ever watched Talks Machina? I’ll randomly catch a little bit of it on Tuesday nights if I’m bored. The show itself is a really stupid idea in principle but the execution of it is amazing and I usually laugh out loud at some of their bits.
