Contacting her family is going to confuse the fuck out of them and make Sterling A more likely to harm himself and/or others. I’d say the best route is reaching out to him through PM or Facebook. I would only contact her family as a last resort or if he starts threatening folks.

Sadly I think this will be a hot take but here it goes - We're beyond the shock and surprise of this bananas story. We've all had our fun w the jokes, but it's clear that the schedenfraude / dog piling for jokes / likes is more important to some than the actual faux concern for the girl. What could be more entertaining, than including her family in all this, right?!?! What Sterling did is super creepy, weird and really troubling. As far as we can tell, all of this is contained to TMB, right? If Im wrong here, I apologize, but from what I knew of Sterling as a poster - he just posted a lot of tweets, didnt really seem him butt heads w anyone. Not a bigot, or a racist, or a shitty poster / person outside of what seems to be a really fucking weird made up story to get some attention from internet strangers. Ive read a few articles recently about how people like him get radicalized in to the far right bullshit. They're lonely, feel ostracized from society (in this case his own doing in our little society) He's clearly a sad dude. Times like these are when the incels getting radicalized online, instead of spending the time online here - he goes to other places that slowly turn you into a psycho (or more than what you already are) Maybe that applies to Sterling, maybe it doesnt. Perhaps a little bit of kindness here could go a long way. I know we started as a group that took pride in being a bunch of assholes to each other. But we've been pretty great to each other at times too. Maybe in the grad scheme of things showing a little mercy is better in the long run than treating this like a true crime podcasts solely for our own enjoyment. It's not that he deserves any of that from us, or that his actions here are excusable, but it's not the end of the world to gives those things to him. We definitely need to contact the family – in the midst of all the terrible shit that's been going on with their loved one – to tell them that some guy on the internet may have exaggerated (or totally fabricated) a relationship with said loved one. I know that's what I would want to hear if I were in a situation like that.

I've followed this thread but haven't posted much. And I haven't looked up anyone's facebook or anything and have no intention of doing so. But I think the last few pages of trying to rationalize Sterling A 's postings/this thread is gross. People have no idea if he's sad or lonely or depressed or anything else. We do know that he is sociopathic. That doesn't necessarily mean he's dangerous but I personally would want to know if my sister/daughter/mom had some family friend or former roommate who was posing as her fiance on the internet. The posts recently about how he's probably just lonely and isolated read like the neighbors of mass shooters who swore he was just a nice, quiet guy.
Oh that's horseshit. What do you think leads these guys onto the path into online radicalization? Isolation, being ostracized, lack of a real life social network.
