Could someone tell me what the fuck is going on with this skinny repeal? Is it going yo be voted on today? It needs only 50+1 right? Is it going to pass?
That would require Trump to actually draw up some sort of order. Yeah this is gonna be a tweet that is lost to memory while we discuss some other bullshit next week.
Well, the details we had earlier were that it fell like 60 billion short of being budget neutral, so likely they are cutting in to medicare haaaaard to make up the difference. If its up for a vote, thats where the money us coming from. Tell your parents
Not unless theyre bought off in the bill. Then they have something to point to, like funding for building projects or whatever, so their constituents can think they won something in it instead of having health insurance
Lindsey and others are more worried about Sessions than Mueller. It's still going to come down to massive public uprising if people are concerned enough about retaining what's left. IMO we are too apathetic and lazy and will just roll with the changes to a different system of govt. Adios democracy.
Pretty much. Have said since the beginning that it's going to take a general strike -- prolonged general strike + people in the streets willing to get arrested -- to stop this. I don't think anyone is willing to do this, but if you look at places in the world where an authoritarian was removed without some sort of civil war, this is what it has taken. People willing to lose their jobs, their livelihood, their life savings to save their country. No chance this happens here. We're way too soft.
I mean, this is Lindsey's last hoorah as a United States senator, so he really has nothing to lose politically. He has been (rightly) very critical of trump since day one. I just wonder if he would voice the same concerns if this was going on earlier in his career. Seems like decent dude, disagree with his political views but he doesn't seem evil like some of his peers.
Antifa is, generally speaking. But you're right in that there aren't enough mass numbers of people that are willing to make the sacrifices it will take to keep our democracy. The women's march wasn't even close to enough.
The situations where uprisings occur are usually coupled with poor economics, etc. Much easier to get an uprising going in Venezuela where inflation is 1,000% and food isn't available than in the US where almost everybody is doing the same as they were a year ago.
He's going to lose the election in 3.5 years if he's even allowed on the Republican ticket. He's always going to have his cult members and a twitter account, but most people including republicans see how fucking dumb and unqualified he is. That was fine when he was embracing the republican party, but he's going to continue to isolate himself from them. That's what narcissists do. I'll be honest, fighting this half hearted lazy authoritarian is the sort of test our democracy needs to stand up to from time to time.
Graham is the type of guy that may seem sane domestically and socially, but he is so balls deep into the military industrial complex that he thinks we need to go to war against people who don't like us as a blanket foreign policy. He's absolutely insane when it comes to defense
Yep. Theory in link says 3.5% of population needs to rise up. That's 10 million or so. Not optimistic. https://rationalinsurgent.com/2013/11/04/my-talk-at-tedxboulder-civil-resistance-and-the-3-5-rule/
You could tell he was basically just trying to audition for SoD by the end of his half hearted presidential campaign.
The women's march was an exercise in how to take a selfie while capturing the crowd and a national monument or important building in the frame. Look, marches like this are important because they feel empowering --- "wow, I'm not alone" but that's about it...
I 100% agree. The only way to make the government accountable (this one in particular) is to make them scared of us again by virtue of sheer numbers and a willingness to fight them with more than just words.
And on the other end of the spectrum, these strict liability punishments usually result in settlement since it's cheaper to settle then litigate relatively paltry claims. There are plenty of shitbag attorneys making plenty of money by asserting these claims, doing a lot of unnecessary work and settling because they know that's likely most creditors will operate.
Venezuela just did a national strike that brought the country to a standstill -- we need to have enough people willing to do the same. Realistically, that won't happen because everyone's too desperate to pay their bills to risk losing their jobs. It's gonna take us descending into third world hellhole conditions for enough people to say "fuck it, what else do I have to lose?" and put their bodies on the line against the state.
It was also important for being bigger than the inauguration. And inspiring people to be engaged and call their representatives. And camp out in their offices. And speak up at town halls.
I mean, it was bigger than that. It was basically a massive statement that "we're still here mother fuckers." I know it was technically a women's march but that was the overarching statement. Again, there isn't gonna be a revolution because there won't be any need for a revolution. Trump is going to be gone in 3.5 years and we'll all look back on this as a what the fuck moment.
They have so long failed to come up with a reasonable plan that they are desperate enough to pass anything to appease their base that they will vote to send a shitty rushed bill that doesn't do what they want to conference without knowing anything about it and risk the possibility that it gets passed in the house with no alteration.
They're basically aping Erdogan and Duterte at this point so imo it's really dangerous to treat this as an article of faith.
Has anyone, besides you, and I mean CIA or other people who aren't retarded, even broached this idea? I'll save you the time, the answer is no, because it's just patentenedly retarded. We should investigsy e 2012 because one candidate said something mean and the other didn't. You just can't help yourself.
This bill will basically destroy the markets though. It will have almost the same effect as a straight repeal. It's so god damn depressing.
Exactly. A creditor's best day in court is that they spend thousands in fees and don't have to pay the plaintiff anything.
Very important and the ability to connect massive numbers quickly is one of the few upsides of social media. If it comes down to larger protests, the deciding factor will be the choices that the cops and military make when given orders by the DOJ and the Admin.
Glad you brought that up, has Tobias woke up and seen that embarassment of a topic he started last night. Talk about cringe
